MADURAI: A Kanyakumari-based influencer posted reels flaunting her gold ornaments and showering her child with cash notes. She also posted updates about the family’s shopping trips and outings.The reels were perhaps meant to bedazzle and overawe her social media friends and followers with her extravagant lifestyle but left her family poorer by Rs 1 crore. Burglars took a cue and made the most of the information.Late Thursday evening, after the family came back home from a shopping trip, they found 120 sovereigns of gold ornaments, diamond jewellery and 50,000 in cash missing.The burglary was reported at the house of Madhumita, a YouTube and Instagram influencer, at Thamathukonam near Nagercoil, the headquarters of Kanyakumari district. Her husband, Vinoth Kumar, is a businessman.The family, which had gone out earlier in the evening to shop for clothes, discovered the theft after returning. They found the almirah in the bedroom forced open and the valuables missing.Police arrived after being informed and found that the intruders hadentered the house after breaking open the rear door lock. “The SP visited the crime scene, and five special teams have been formed to track the suspects,” said inspector Jayalakshmi.Police are now examining Madhumitha’s social media activity as part of the investigation. Her reels and posts featured her showing off her jewellery at home, displaying bundles of cash spread across a mattress and showering money on her child.“She had also uploaded videos boasting that the family bought gold every month. Other reels routinely disclosed where the family was travelling and the purpose of their outings,” said an investigating officer.According to police, the burglars tracked Madhumitha’s reels and timed their strike when the house was vacant.
