Make America Manly Again (MAMA): MAGA toughies mope over declining machismo
Trump’s top officials put male fertility in spotlight

TOI correspondent from Washington: MAGA mavericks are discovering the United States is coming up short in a vital national resource, and no, it isn’t rare earth minerals, artificial intelligence, or strategic petroleum reserves. It is reproductive potency and testicular fortitude — or more explicitly, testosterone and sperm count. In recent months, two senior Trump administration officials, defense secretary Pete Hegseth and health secretary Robert Kennedy Jr, have been publicly talking up testosterone levels, declining sperm counts and the perceived crisis of modern masculinity, turning what was once the preserve of awkward high-school health classes into a national dinner-table conversation. If Hegseth is to be believed, America is suffering not from inflation but from deflation—specifically of testosterone. “We’re creating a generation of weak men,” the defense secretary recently warned, urging a return to a warrior mentality and old-fashioned toughness. He announced that the Pentagon will start testing US soldiers 30 and older for testosterone deficiency and offer offering TRT – testosterone replacement therapy – as an option. Kennedy meanwhile has elevated sperm counts to the status of a national vital sign, warning that “sperm counts have dropped about 50 per cent” and claiming today’s teenage boys have less testosterone than their grandfathers did. Between the two, Washington suddenly sounds less like the seat of the world’s most powerful government and more like a men’s health convention sponsored by a vitamin company and a gym chain. The administration’s newest metric of national strength no longer seems to be GDP, the stock market, or aircraft carriers. It may soon be SPM: sperm per million. Washington insiders are joking that the Pentagon’s readiness reports could soon include troop strength, ammunition inventories and average testosterone levels. Nato, meanwhile, may quietly wonder whether Article 5 now covers fertility supplements. To be fair, there is a kernel of science buried beneath the moping about machismo. A number of studies have reported declines in sperm counts over several decades in many countries, although researchers continue to debate the magnitude, causes and implications. Environmental chemicals, obesity, smoking, alcohol, poor diets, stress, sedentary lifestyles and even excessive heat exposure have all been investigated as possible contributors. Scientists generally agree that reproductive health deserves study. They are rather less enthusiastic about turning every podcast into an audition for “America’s Got Testicles.”Naturally, trolls have gone to town. “Make America Grate Again,” quipped one user, posting a picture of parmesan cheese labeled “High Testosterone Blend.” Another asked whether the next White House physical would require a blood test or simply an arm-wrestling contest. A viral meme featured Uncle Sam pointing at the viewer beneath the slogan: “Your country needs… stronger swimmers.” Others imagined a future State of the Union in which the president proudly announces that “our numbers are up in all the polls — including the microscopic ones.” Another meme showed Hegseth squeezing the cojones of a line-up of troops. Comedians needed little encouragement diving into troubled waters with proposals for a cabinet-level department of testicular affairs, a White House “Office of Strategic Reproduction,” and a presidential daily brief delivered with the headline: “Mission Accomplished… Motility Improving.” The jokes practically wrote themselves because the rhetoric — or “sementic” — sounds as though America is preparing for the Olympics of alpha males. While the administration’s argument that declining health among young men — including obesity, low physical fitness and possible fertility problems — deserves attention, the comic disconnect arises when legitimate public-health questions are wrapped in the language of superhero masculinity, turning testosterone into a campaign slogan rather than a hormone. Hegseth has spoken repeatedly about restoring America’s “warrior ethos,” diving into planks and push-ups himself to gee-up troops. Washington has always measured power in missiles, money and votes, but it now appears to have elevated masculinity into a national security concern. In the latest chapter of American politics, Trump toughies are demonstrating that no issue is too intimate to become ideological, turning the great Jeffersonian ideal on its head: Life, liberty… and the pursuit of virility.
