“My parents are more….”: Woman quits high paying corporate job after 6 years in Canada, returns to India for ageing parents and health

After spending six years in Canada and building a career at Deloitte, Preeti Bisnik has decided to leave her job and return to India. Her decision is not driven by a lack of opportunities or a job loss. Instead, she says she wants to spend more time with her ageing parents, improve her own health and take a break from her corporate career. In an Instagram video posted on September 22, Preeti explained that she had resigned from her job and was preparing to return to India. She also clarified that she was not laid off and that her manager had offered her the option of taking some time off before potentially returning to the company. For Preeti, however, the decision was about priorities rather than employment. As a Canadian citizen, she can continue living and working in Canada, but she said she no longer wanted to put off spending time with her parents.

Her ageing parents became the biggest reason to return

Preeti said her parents are getting older, and her mother’s health has made her think more seriously about being physically present for them. She explained that her mother is dealing with glaucoma as well as difficulties with mobility and that she did not want to remain thousands of kilometres away and later regret not spending enough time with her parents. She also wants to use the knowledge she gained while studying nutrition in Canada to support her parents’ health. Her plans include helping them focus on nutrition, fitness and strength. Rather than immediately looking for another job after returning, Preeti said she wants to take some time for herself and her family. She may decide next year what she wants to do professionally.Her decision also comes after a personal health and fitness journey. Preeti said she weighed around 78 kg when she moved from India to Canada. Over the next six years, her weight increased to nearly 100 kg. She has since lost around 10 kg and now wants to devote more time to improving her fitness. After years of working in a sedentary, computer-based corporate role, she said she wants to step away from that routine for a while.

Why she chose to return instead of bringing her parents to Canada

Preeti’s decision prompted several questions from people online, including why she could not bring her parents to Canada. She explained that moving them would not necessarily be easy, particularly because of her mother’s health. According to Preeti, her mother has glaucoma and may find the long flight difficult because of her mobility issues. Her father is also elderly. She also clarified that she is not her parents’ only child. She said her brothers live in the US and London, but she still wants to be physically closer to her parents during this stage of their lives. For Preeti, the decision appears to be less about choosing one country over another and more about deciding what matters most to her at this point in life.
