“I did my office work in incognito mode, and it got me a promotion”: Man shares tips that can help in the career growth of corporate employees

A workplace story shared by a man named Harshit Mahawar has sparked discussion online after he claimed that regularly using incognito mode while working helped create an unusual impression among his employers and colleagues. According to Mahawar, he uses private browsing for his office work because he believes employers monitor employees’ browsing activity. However, his claim should be treated as a personal account rather than proof that using incognito mode can lead to faster promotions. Incognito or private browsing generally prevents the browser from saving certain information, such as local browsing history and cookies after a session. It does not make a user’s online activity invisible to an employer, network administrator or internet service provider.

He says private browsing became part of his work routine

In a video, Mahawar explained why he chooses to use incognito mode while working. He said, “Main apna sara office work incognito mode me karta hoon aur main koi moorkh nahi hoon kyunki humare employers humara browsing data track karte hain. Aur guess karo wo sabse kadi monitoring kiski karte honge? Private browsing.” Mahawar appears to suggest that private browsing gives him an additional layer of privacy while using his workplace computer. His comments also reflect a common misunderstanding about what incognito mode actually does. Private browsing can stop the browser from retaining certain records locally, but it is not designed to prevent employers from monitoring activity on company devices or networks. Depending on an organisation’s systems and policies, employers may still have other ways of monitoring network traffic, device activity or access to workplace resources.

He links incognito browsing to three unexpected benefits

Mahawar went on to claim that the habit has produced three major benefits in his professional life. He said, “Is habit ke mujhe 3 behatreen results dikhe hain. 1. Doors are better, with hikes and perks. 2. 3 saal me freshers se VP banne wala main youngest employee hoon. 3. Colleagues mere success se confused hai kyunki meri browsing history me kuch hai hi nahi.” According to his account, he believes the absence of browsing history has contributed to how colleagues perceive his work habits. He also claimed that he has received better salary hikes and perks and that he became the youngest employee to rise from a fresher to a vice president in three years. There is no information in the provided account independently verifying that his use of incognito mode caused these professional outcomes. Promotions, salary increases and career progression can depend on many factors, including performance, responsibilities, skills, experience and organisational decisions.

‘History is created by those who leave no browser history’

Mahawar ended his video with a humorous line that appears to have become the central message of his story. He said, “Ek baat yaad rakhna doston, ‘History is created by those who leave no browser history.’” The statement plays on the word “history”, turning a technical feature of private browsing into a joke about professional success. While the claim may be entertaining, employees should not assume that using incognito mode will hide their online activity from their employer. Google’s Chrome guidance, for example, notes that incognito mode limits what is saved on the device but does not necessarily prevent activity from being visible to employers, schools or other organisations that manage the network.Ultimately, Mahawar’s story is best understood as an unusual workplace anecdote rather than evidence of a career strategy. His experience may have generated attention because of the contrast between an apparently empty browser history and his claimed professional rise, but there is no established psychological or workplace principle suggesting that private browsing itself leads to faster promotions.
