Amazon settles a class-action case over allegations involving its return policies in Washington; proposes $309.5 million fund for customers: Who is eligible
Amazon has agreed to a proposed $309.5 million settlement fund in a class-action case involving allegations about its return and refund policies in the Washington state. The case concerns customers who may not have received refunds correctly or on time, or who received a refund and were later charged again for returned products. As stated in an AP report, Amazon has denied the allegations and any wrongdoing. The court, on the other hand, has not found that Amazon violated any law or engaged in misconduct.As per the report, the proposed settlement will need court approval. The court has scheduled a Final Approval Hearing for March 16, 2027, at 10 am in Seattle, Washington. If approved, eligible customers could receive payments under the settlement terms.
Who is eligible for the Amazon refund settlement
The settlement has two groups, known as Subclass A and Subclass B. The payment process is different for each group. A person may qualify if they:– Initiated a return to Amazon or requested a refund for a physical product purchased through Amazon.com.– Amazon’s records show that the product was received in the US.– The purchase and return or refund falls between September 5, 2017, and February 12, 2026.– The customer either did not receive a refund, received a late or incorrect refund, or received a refund but was later charged by Amazon for the returned product.
How much money will Amazon pay
Under the proposed settlement, Amazon will pay $309.5 million into a non-reversionary common fund. The fund will be used to make payments to eligible class members according to the settlement’s distribution plan. It will also cover payments to the settlement administrator and other settlement-related costs, including attorneys’ fees and incentive awards, subject to court approval.Amazon also said it identified some potentially unpaid refunds after the lawsuit was filed. In 2025, the company began a process to pay some of those refunds.These included refunds that were not completed because of payment-processing problems and refunds where Amazon did not have enough confirmation that the correct products had been returned.Under the proposed settlement, Amazon has agreed to make reasonable efforts to complete these payments separately from the $309.5 million settlement fund.
How can eligible Amazon customers get refund
The process depends on which settlement subclass a customer belongs to. Subclass A members will automatically receive a payment under the settlement. However, they must visit the settlement website within 105 days after the court grants final approval to select their preferred payment method.While the Subclass B members must submit a claim form to receive a payment. Amazon denies the allegations
The lawsuit, In re: Amazon Return Policy Litigation, is pending in the US District Court for the Western District of Washington Amazon denies the plaintiffs’ allegations and denies any wrongdoing.The court, on the other hand, has not determined that Amazon engaged in misconduct or violated consumer protection laws. The court has also not yet decided whether the case should proceed as a class action. The proposed settlement would resolve the case if it receives final approval.
