In July 2020, Westcott signed a contract to sell his estate for USD 15 million to Bernie Gudvi, who was acting as the official business manager and representative for Katy Perry and her then-partner, Orlando Bloom. Perry had been looking to buy the house to raise her family there with Bloom, specifically for their daughter, Daisy.Even though the deal had been signed for, after some time Westcott argued that he did not wish to make the sale and wanted his property back. His legal representatives also filed a lawsuit to void the deal at the time. Their argument to drop the deal between him and Perry involved his 2015 diagnosis of Huntington’s disease and the claim that only days prior to the incident, he had undergone major six-hour spinal surgery. However, despite all of the things, in late 2023, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Joseph Lipner ruled in favor of Perry’s team.The judge concluded there was no ‘persuasive evidence’ of incapacity, stating that Westcott appeared to be “coherent, engaged, lucid, and rational.” Evidence shown in court also revealed and proved how Westcott had actively been engaged during negotiations, rejected lower bids, extended deadlines, and considered competing offers (including one from Maria Shriver) while appearing coherent and rational. All of this resulted in the court ruling in favor of the pop icon.Perry then officially gained legal possession of the mansion in early 2024. Other than winning the case and regaining ownership of the USD 15 million home, Perry also filed a suit of her own, seeking damages over whatever the case entailed for her for the past couple of years. The court then calculated USD 2.7 million for lost rental income for the 3.5 years that Perry was blocked from using the home, along with USD 1.8 million that the court ordered Westcott to pay Perry in net damages. Initially, her legal counsel had asked for USD 6 million in damages; however, the judge had reduced the amount, stating that it was too high for the nature of this case.Lastly, the court also asked Westcott to pay Perry USD 3.45 million in attorney fees and court costs.
