For sailor Rusheel Saran, the setting could hardly have been more unusual: the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. Saran recently shared a video documenting the extraordinary moment when his ship crossed paths with another vessel carrying his father, Raviraj Saran. The video was shared by Rusheel Saran on Instagram at @rusheel_saran. The two men were sailing on separate ships and travelling in opposite directions when their routes happened to intersect far from land.
How the father and son crossed paths
According to his video, Rusheel was sailing north when he noticed a large vessel approaching from the opposite direction. After checking the vessel’s details and route, he realised that his father was aboard it and that the ship was heading south.There had been no planned reunion waiting for either of them. Their ships were simply following separate routes, and for a brief stretch of their journeys, those routes brought them remarkably close to each other. That made the encounter particularly unusual. At sea, where vessels can travel for days across enormous stretches of open water, a chance meeting with someone you know is already uncommon. For Rusheel, discovering that the approaching ship carried his own father turned an otherwise routine passage into a family moment.

The encounter also carried a personal significance because both father and son are sailors.
