Keith Boyd completed a 6,706-mile journey from Cape Town to Cairo in 301 days in 2024, setting a new record for the fastest journey between the two cities on foot. The 57-year-old British-South African runner crossed 9 countries during the challenge, but the route became particularly dangerous in Ethiopia, where he and his videographer were stopped, beaten and held by armed men. Despite the serious security problems, Boyd eventually completed the remaining section of his route and reached Cairo, surpassing the previous record by 17 days.

How did a 57-year-old run from Cape Town to Cairo

Boyd covered 10,793 kilometres, travelling through South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt. Guinness World Records reported that he completed the journey in 301 days, beating a 25-year-old record of 318 days by 17 days. Men’s Fitness reported his exact finishing time as 301 days, 20 hours and 58 minutes, with Boyd reaching Cairo on 22 May 2024.The route was not simply a continuous run from one capital to another. Boyd had to change his plans because of the conflict in Sudan. He had originally intended to travel in the opposite direction, from Cairo to Cape Town, but chose to begin in South Africa in the hope that conditions in Sudan would improve by the time he reached that country. The journey was supported by a small team travelling in a van carrying camping equipment and medical supplies. During the earlier stages, Boyd made steady progress. Guinness World Records reported that he crossed South Africa in 47 days, while Botswana and Zimbabwe took a little over two weeks. Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya each took roughly a month.

The daily running routine behind Boyd’s record-breaking journey

Boyd averaged around 50 kilometres a day during much of the challenge, often dividing the distance into five 10-kilometre sections. As reported by Men’s Fitness, he described a slightly different routine during the Sudan and Egypt sections, when he normally began around 5.30am and ran four blocks of about 12.5 kilometres, walking for 20 to 30 minutes between them. Not every day followed the same pattern. Some days involved as little as 5 kilometres, while others reached 50 kilometres. Overall, Men’s Fitness reported 125 days as his longest continuous stretch of back-to-back running. It also reported 60 non-running days, including 54 linked to Ethiopian security and paperwork problems, five because of illness and one for repacking.Preparation for such a long journey was intensive. Guinness World Records reported that Boyd trained for 4 months, running about 200 kilometres each week to build strength and endurance in his feet, legs and back.

How did the Ethiopia kidnapping attempt change the journey

Ethiopia became the most dangerous part of the expedition. Boyd was travelling through the northern Amhara region when he and his videographer were stopped by armed men. According to Guinness World Records, the pair were beaten and forced into a van after being intercepted while trying to cross the area.Men’s Fitness reported that the gunmen demanded his support team to arrange for a ransom. He and the videographer were threatened with being taken into a forest, where finding them would have been extremely difficult. Boyd managed to delay the situation and eventually negotiated their release for $1,000.Afterwards, he continued for another 100 kilometres with a military escort. The security situation eventually became too dangerous, however, and he had to leave Ethiopia and continue towards Sudan without completing that section. The experience meant that reaching Cairo did not immediately mark the end of the challenge. Boyd still had approximately 500 kilometres of Ethiopia to complete.

The final Ethiopian section brought further danger

After reaching Cairo, Boyd sought permission and security assistance to return to Ethiopia and finish the missing section. Guinness World Records reported that he petitioned the Ethiopian government for protection but received no response for almost three weeks. He eventually arranged the journey with local civilians and officials. The return was still extremely difficult. Guinness World Records reported that Boyd and his team were ambushed and had to take cover in a ditch. They were also held overnight in an overcrowded cell without being charged and faced further threats and assaults from armed men. Despite those setbacks, he completed the final stretch and left the region safely.

Why did Boyd take on such a demanding challenge

The run had a purpose beyond the record. Guinness World Records reported that Boyd undertook the challenge to raise money for Rainbow Leaders, his non-profit organisation, which works to encourage young people in Africa to participate in elections as part of efforts to address poverty.Boyd had also spent more than 30 years working in telecommunications in Africa, giving him a long personal connection with the continent and its communities. The challenge therefore combined an endurance goal with fundraising and civic engagement.

The run took a heavy physical toll

The distance and length of the journey placed considerable strain on Boyd’s body. Men’s Fitness reported that his feet and particularly his left ankle became swollen, while he also developed tendonitis. He used 3 types of running shoes to deal with different problems, including ankle stability, impact and rough terrain.Recovery became part of his daily routine. Boyd said he aimed for 8 to 9 hours of sleep and used stretching and a roller to help his body recover. He also consumed protein through shakes and bars, although he lost weight and muscle from his thighs during the journey.
