In a workshop filled with discarded tools, broken machinery and pieces of scrap metal, 14-year-old Charlie Guiver has found the raw materials for an unusual artistic career. The Dunsborough teenager turns unwanted objects into detailed animal sculptures, including a large wolf that recently sold for $8,000, according to an online report by ABC News. Now, the young sculptor is taking his work beyond his shed. The September 13 report states that Charlie will open his private studio to the public as part of the Margaret River Region Open Studios event, making him the youngest artist to take part in the major annual showcase. From electric drills to metal sculptures
Charlie’s interest in tools began unusually early. His parents introduced him to using an electric drill before he could even walk, and his fascination with dismantling and rebuilding objects continued as he grew older, states the report. Today, his workshop has become the place where that curiosity takes shape. He collects discarded tools and machinery from local salvage yards and transforms them into sculptures inspired largely by animals. His process begins with an image of the finished sculpture already formed in his mind. He then searches salvage yards for the individual pieces that can become its eyes, limbs, body or other details before cutting, shaping and welding everything together. Among his favorite creations is a kinetic eagle designed to move with the wind, giving the sculpture a life-like quality beyond its static form, the report adds.
An $8,000 wolf
Balancing schoolwork with his creative projects, Charlie works mainly during evenings and weekends, claims the online report. The hours spent in the workshop have already produced a significant milestone: the sale of a large scrap-metal wolf for $8,000. The sale is a striking achievement for an artist who is only 14 and still fitting sculpture around homework and school commitments. Rather than starting with expensive materials, Charlie’s work is rooted in reclamation. Old tools and discarded metal that might otherwise end up unused are given a second life through his sculptures, the report states.
Youngest artist at open studios
As per the news, Charlie will open his shed studio during the Margaret River Region Open Studios event, giving visitors a chance to see his workspace and understand how his sculptures are made. The event brings together 155 artists who open their studios to the public for two weeks beginning September 12. It is considered the largest event of its kind in Australia, the report adds.For Charlie, the opportunity also offers a glimpse into what life as a working artist could eventually look like. He hopes to travel to Europe with his older brother to study traditional blacksmithing techniques, although his immediate focus remains on developing his craft.The report also states that the event has become an important part of the region’s creative economy. Last year, it recorded more than 100,000 studio visits and generated more than $2 million in art sales.
