From Op Sindoor to Urgent Fury, how network warfare has changed the way conflicts are being fought
Well entrenched in the information age, network-centric warfare is changing the way wars are fought. At its core, network-centric warfare is about gathering and turning information into a battlefield advantage. This is done by connecting sensors, commanders and weapons into a single digital fabric that lets forces see, decide, act and strike faster than an adversary can react. Rather than relying on the rigid hierarchies associated with militaries, the new paradigm flattens command structures, linking soldiers, smart weapons, command centres and platforms across land, air, sea and space into one shared communication network, stretching from army headquarters down to the individual soldier on the ground.The nature of combat itself is evolving alongside this shift. Small drones have fundamentally changed how soldiers operate on the battlefield, acting as what one recent analysis called “bombs with eyes,” capable of spotting, tracking and striking troops from considerable distances. This has forced a rethink in tactics, with soldiers increasingly prioritising concealment over holding ground, and a growing recognition that counter-drone technology, lasers, microwave weapons, interceptor drones, and anti-drone rifles need to extend down to individual soldier-level protection, not just larger area defences.For India, network-centric warfare is fast becoming a genuine security imperative. The country faces two very different border theatres, alongside pressure across maritime, air, space and cyber domains all at once. In such an environment, speed of information matters enormously, as a force that detects and understands a threat first only gains an advantage if that information can also be shared reliably and converted swiftly into action.India has already built meaningful pieces of this architecture. AFNET and the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) connect sensors, command centres and air defence systems, forming the digital backbone of the Air Force, while the Defence Communication Network (DCN) provides secure connectivity across all three services. Akashteer has further strengthened integration of Army air defence systems into this wider network. These systems proved their worth during Operation Sindoor, when IACCS, Akashteer and the Navy’s Trigun system worked in tandem to build a shared operational picture and support faster battlefield decisions. India also rolled out the Indian Radio Software Architecture Standard 1.0 in October 2025, a common software framework enabling different military radios to communicate across platforms, reducing reliance on foreign communication technology in the process. Other networks, such as the Artillery Combat Command and Control System (ACCCS) network, also improve the effectiveness of this increasingly important arm.Ultimately, the decisive edge in network-centric warfare won’t necessarily belong to whoever fields the most advanced individual platform, but to whoever can keep their network functioning under attack, make sound decisions under pressure, and deliver effects at precisely the right moment—a network that survives uncertainty rather than merely one that’s fast.
