‘Will take body to campus, won’t leave’: Father demands arrests in IIT-Bombay student suicide | Mumbai News
MUMBAI: The father of an IIT-Bombay student who died by suicide has said he will take his son’s body to the campus and refuse to leave until those responsible for his death are arrested, as protests continued at the institute on Saturday.The student’s father, Ravindra Wakode, a bank employee, said that he will be taking the body to the campus and will not leave till officials responsible for his death are arrested.The student’s parents, who are from Yavatmal, reached the IIT-Bombay campus on Saturday, a day after their second-year son died by suicide.The family has alleged that the death was linked to casteism and “institutional torture” and maintained that their son would not have taken such an extreme step.
Family names people as police register abetment case
Powai Police registered a case of abetment of suicide on Saturday in connection with the student’s death. Police said the FIR was lodged against multiple people allegedly responsible for the suicide, while the family has named a few people.Fresh protests were also held on the IIT-Bombay campus on Saturday morning, with several students continuing their demonstration through the night following the student’s death.
Student caught with mobile phone during IIT-Bombay exam
The student had been caught with a mobile phone during his exam on Friday. Students alleged that he was threatened with suspension following the incident.However, IIT-Bombay, in a statement issued on Friday night, said no disciplinary action had been initiated against him.“The matter was also discussed with the student by the instructor and the head of the department, who counselled him and assured him that the incident would not adversely affect his academic career,” the institute said.The mid-semester examinations scheduled for Saturday were postponed.
