Terry Bradshaw has offered his view on why Nick Saban walked away from Alabama, saying the former coach did not want to spend his final years dealing with the new demands of college football. Bradshaw shared his view during an appearance on The Buddy Martin Show. He pointed to one part of modern college football that he believes Saban simply did not want to keep dealing with.“I think Nick Saban left Alabama because he didn’t want to do that,” Bradshaw said. “Look, you don’t want to have to continue to recruit your players that you’ve already signed year after year after year.”Bradshaw was talking about the growing role of money in college football. With NIL deals and the transfer portal changing how rosters are built, coaches now have to spend more time keeping players, finding replacements and dealing with financial questions.Saban had already spoken openly about those changes before leaving Alabama. Saban’s retirement came nine days after Alabama lost to Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Saban won six national championships with the Crimson Tide and seven overall, including one at LSU. He finished his Alabama run with a 201 29 record.The NIL issue has not disappeared from Saban’s life since he left coaching. He has continued to speak about how college sports should be managed, and in 2026 he became a public supporter of the Protect College Sports Act.The bill, introduced by Senators Maria Cantwell and Ted Cruz, would create federal rules for NIL deals, transfers, recruiting and other parts of college athletics. It also includes a revenue sharing framework and protections for women’s and Olympic sports. The Senate advanced the bill in September, but it still requires further action before it can become law.Saban has also appeared in a $10 million advertising campaign supporting the bill alongside Deion Sanders.
