‘I had no doubts’: Lone holdout juror says Lindsay Clancy deliberately killed her 3 children
The lone holdout juror in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial has said he had “no doubts” that the Massachusetts mother was criminally responsible for killing her three children, despite the jury remaining deadlocked and forcing a mistrial.According to the BBC, juror Michael P Desronvil said the physical evidence, key witnesses and prosecution’s case convinced him that Clancy knew what she was doing and had planned the killings. “I didn’t have any doubts,” he said in a statement issued through his lawyer.A Massachusetts judge declared a mistrial on September 4 after the 12-member jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict following nearly 40 hours of deliberations. Eleven jurors ultimately supported finding Clancy not criminally responsible, while Desronvil remained the sole holdout.Clancy, 36, was accused of killing her three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, at the family’s Massachusetts home on January 24, 2023. She later jumped from a second-floor window.
What did the holdout juror say?
Desronvil said the evidence presented during the trial was enough to establish that Clancy had intentionally killed her children and had planned the act.“As I tried to explain different possible theories during deliberation, I kept getting cut off as if I had doubts based on the evidence presented,” he said.His comments contrast with statements from other jurors, who have described lengthy efforts to persuade him to change his position. One juror told CBS that the panel spent several days trying to convince Desronvil after the jury became divided.Another juror told NBC that Desronvil had acknowledged reasonable doubt but still refused to support a finding that Clancy was not criminally responsible.
Defence argued postpartum psychosis
Clancy’s defence argued that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis when she killed her children and was unable to understand the nature of her actions or distinguish right from wrong.A forensic psychiatrist who testified for the defence said Clancy experienced a “command hallucination” and a “delusion of influence” during the killings. Prosecutors, however, argued that Clancy was aware of her actions and had planned the murders.The jury had several options, including first-degree murder, lesser charges such as manslaughter, and a finding of not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility.Under Massachusetts law, prosecutors had to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Clancy was criminally responsible for the killings.
What happens next?
The mistrial leaves the case unresolved, with prosecutors yet to announce whether they will seek a retrial. Clancy’s lawyer Kevin Reddington has filed a motion seeking to have the charges dropped and said he hopes to reach an agreement with prosecutors to avoid another trial.The next court hearing is scheduled for September 29 at Plymouth Superior Court.Clancy’s former husband, Patrick Clancy, is also due to speak publicly about the case in an upcoming 60 Minutes interview, where he is expected to discuss his grief, memories of his children and conspiracy theories that circulated online after the killings.
