Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has pledged $600,000 to install air conditioning units at Northeast High School, expanding his ongoing effort to help keep local students in classrooms during periods of extreme heat. The donation is aimed at the city’s largest public high school, which serves more than 3,300 students. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, the money will pay for the purchase and installation of commercial-grade cooling units to help control temperatures across the large campus. For years, extreme heat in early autumn and late spring has forced the School District of Philadelphia to dismiss students early or cancel classes because of poor climate control in older school buildings. Hurts began his cooling initiative after seeing how rising temperatures in the city were repeatedly disrupting classes at public schools.
Building on earlier pledges
The Northeast High School pledge represents a major increase in Hurts’ financial support for local school infrastructure. In April 2024, Hurts pledged $200,000 through the Jalen Hurts Foundation to provide air conditioning systems for 10 Philadelphia public schools. That funding paid for more than 300 air conditioning units and helped improve indoor conditions at selected schools across the district. The latest $600,000 commitment is focused on Northeast High School, where the size and age of the building have created major heating and cooling challenges. Staff and students gathered at the school when Hurts personally announced the pledge. Photos published by The Philadelphia Inquirer showed the NFL player speaking to students and school officials inside the building, which has experienced repeated disruptions during periods of hot weather. School district officials said the investment will address long-standing equipment shortages that have made it difficult for staff to keep classrooms at safe temperatures.
Widespread infrastructure challenges
The funding for Northeast High School also highlights wider problems with school infrastructure in Philadelphia and other cities across the United States. Many Philadelphia public schools were built decades ago, before air conditioning became common in school buildings. According to information from the School District of Philadelphia, dozens of school buildings do not have central air conditioning, leaving them more affected by rising seasonal temperatures. When indoor temperatures become too high, district officials may order early dismissals to help protect students and teachers from heat-related illness. These unexpected closures can create problems for working families who must quickly find childcare or change their work schedules. During previous heat events, representatives of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers have repeatedly called for more investment to update school buildings and cooling systems. The school district has a multi-billion-dollar capital improvement plan, but limited funding has slowed HVAC upgrades across more than 200 district-operated properties.
