Remember the scene from the Twilight saga, where Edward and Bella exchange vows in a clearing surrounded by wisteria and candlelight, the whole thing bathed in soft woodland light? Though fantasy, the scene stayed with enough people that forest weddings have become shorthand for intimate, magical, just-us-against-the-world celebrations. What if you could have a similar wedding in the midst of a forest that looks straight out of a fairytale?

Getting married in a forest does feel different. There’s something about woodland ceremonies: the intimacy, the dappled light and the feeling that you have stepped into a fantasy world. Bower Estate delivers exactly that aesthetic. Trees, suspended greenery and a transparent marquee that disappears into the hinterland sky create the kind of secluded clearing you’d think only existed in fiction. Tucked away in the Queensland hinterland near Natural Bridge, the family estate provides a dream-like wedding venue. You get the clearing and the greenery, and it dissolves into the hinterland sky so the forest becomes the actual backdrop. And your wedding could be making an actual difference. Every celebration on this 120-acre property funds active conservation work. The couple gets their forest vows, and the land gets another season of regeneration.

Farmland to conservation project

The Bower is nestled in the Gold Coast Hinterland, near the New South Wales border in Natural Bridge. The land is surrounded by some of the most beautiful national parks in Queensland. In 2014, the family bought 120 acres of property that was once used for timber logging and dairy farming. Then they started transforming the land. The kind of unglamorous work that rarely gets any attention: bush regeneration, fencing and replanting native species. The family has been caring about nature and animals for more than three decades, which they also taught their children. After buying this farmland, they applied for grants, partnered with local research initiatives and documented species returning as the habitat improved.“Our family wanted this estate to be more than just a place for events and weddings; it’s a long-term conservation project. Your celebrations help the bigger picture of this land and preserve our flora and fauna for generations to come,” the family says on the estate’s website.

By the early 2020s, they saw noticeable changes. Native species that hadn’t inhabited the area in decades began showing up. “In the last few years we have been lucky to see wallaby, platypus and koala species return to the area through these projects,” they said. The family also registered the property with Land for Wildlife, Queensland’s voluntary programme for private landholders managing wildlife habitat.

Hosting weddings, serving nature

The weddings became the means of funding these conservation projects. A couple’s celebration on a summer evening could fund months of conservation work. A custom-built transparent marquee can accommodate up to 140 guests. Couples get unobstructed hinterland views by day and the southern sky at night. No competing structures or distractions, just pure nature. The Bower Cottage, which is the original farmhouse, has been restored into a luxury three-bedroom cottage that can accommodate up to 10 people. The cottage comes with a sprawling verandah, a space for small wedding parties or bridal preparation. It can accommodate about 100 standing guests.

Guests can also take eco-tours, which include hikes through the pristine trails in the lush forest, exploring the culinary heritage, garden tours and enjoying outdoor activities. The location itself carries spectacle beyond what a venue brochure typically offers. Two kilometres up the road sits Natural Bridge, a section of Springbrook National Park where a waterfall cascades through a cave by day, and at night, the roof of the cave is illuminated by glowworms. The Bower Estate offers the kind of magic one may only see in fantasy films.

Along with preserving the forests and wildlife corridors, the estate also supports local growers and producers. After the wedding, guests take home jars of honey from the Bower Bees. Native raspberries make it to the desserts. They provide a venue for all kinds of events. There is an on-site catering team taking care of the food, as well as event coordination.

The estate’s calendar now stretches beyond weddings: it offers wellness retreats, lovely lunches, eco-education programmes and paddock-to-plate picnic days. Bookings are already being made years in advance, with 2028 dates currently open for those interested.
