When former professional baseball pitcher James Shields aka “Big Game James” and his wife, photographer Ryane Nicole, bought a vacant 2.44-acre parcel in Rancho Santa Fe’s guard-gated Roxbury Estates in late 2018, they weren’t just looking for land. Every detail was executed with a “no room for error” philosophy, from bespoke steel finishes to custom pocketing glass doors that make each opening feel like a window.According to Robb Report, the result is a home that breathes. A curated courtyard leads guests into a soaring great room anchored by a linear fireplace, then flows into a gourmet kitchen equipped with Viking appliances, an eat-in island with built-in pasta pull-outs and seamless access to a shaded terrace with a barbecue station. Monumental 16-foot steel pocket sliders dissolve the boundary between inside and out, framing sunset views like living art.
From the mound to the market
Shields, a California native drafted out of Canyon High in Santa Clarita, made his MLB debut in 2006 with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Known for his durability and postseason grit, he earned the nickname “Big Game James” over six seasons before stints with the Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres and Chicago White Sox. He retired in 2018, the same year he and Ryane Nicole closed on the Rancho Santa Fe lot.Now, after nearly eight years, the couple is ready for their next chapter. According to The Wall Street Journal, they plan to spend more time in Idaho, where they own horses and several properties they intend to develop. “It came sooner than we wanted,” Shields said, “but we feel like we’re ready to evolve into the next project.” Listed with Eric Iantorno and Pilar Meza of Compass, the estate is asking $23 million, as a testament to the time, craft and vision poured into every square foot.
Wellness, recreation and a photographer’s sanctuary
The online report states that beyond its striking aesthetics, the estate functions as a high-performance wellness retreat. The primary suite is a private spa-like sanctuary with a built-in sauna, steam room and direct access to serene grounds. Across five bedrooms, five full bathrooms and three powder rooms, an advanced automation system manages sound, climate and security with a tap.For Ryane Nicole, the home’s creative heart is a light-drenched photography studio, designed to capture the “quiet spirit” of the surrounding equestrian lifestyle. For James, it’s the resort-style amenities: a gym, golf simulator, bowling alley, safe room and putting green. Outside, a swimming pool with a Baja Shelf and spa sits beside a fireside sitting area and an expansive deck for alfresco entertaining.
