For a property built for the kind of life most people only see in movies, Jennifer Lopez’s Bel Air estate finally took its final bow in 2023. According to a report by Architectural Digest, seven years after the singer and actor bought the sprawling California retreat, the eight-acre compound changed hands for roughly $34 million—less than its ambitious asking price, but still a healthy gain on its original purchase.

A profitable exit

Lopez bought the French Country-style estate in 2016 for $28 million, reports Architectural Digest. She later put the property on the market for $42.5 million in February, hoping to capitalize on its expansive grounds, privacy and unusually extensive amenities. The eventual sale, at about $34 million, came in $8.5 million below the original asking price. Even so, the deal left Lopez with an estimated $6 million gain before accounting for transaction costs, taxes, maintenance and improvements made during her ownership. The sale also marked another step in Lopez and Ben Affleck’s efforts to streamline their real estate portfolios after marrying and establishing a home together.

One more property to go

Lopez’s Manhattan penthouse remained the notable holdout. Perched atop a 1920s Georgian-style building near Madison Square Park, the New York residence has spent years appearing on and off the market. It was later listed for just under $25 million. Affleck, meanwhile, had already sold his Pacific Palisades home for $28.5 million in October 2022. The couple subsequently made a much larger real estate move, purchasing a Beverly Hills estate for $61 million.Their new home dwarfed the Bel Air property in scale, spanning roughly 38,000 square feet and offering an indoor sports complex, home theater, salon, 155-foot infinity pool and a 12-car garage.

The Bel Air dream

The nine-bedroom Bel Air estate’s appeal extends well beyond its mansion. The eight-acre grounds feature a private lake edged by a sandy beach, a waterfall, putting green, 100-seat amphitheater, pagoda with a fire pit, above-ground pool, two guest cottages and woodland trails, reports Architectural Digest.Inside, the stone-sided residence leans into old-world California luxury, with a 30-seat private theater, bar and wood-paneled library. Fireplaces, exposed ceiling beams, skylights and French doors add warmth, while multiple terraces blur the line between the interiors and the surrounding landscape.According to Architectural Digest, the buyer has not been publicly identified, but the sale closed a significant chapter in Lopez’s Los Angeles real estate story and left just one major property still waiting for its next owner.Images Courtesy: Instagram and Architectural Digest
