In 1995, Dr. Bryan Cox was a young doctor beginning his medical career. One of his patients was a baby girl named Lauren Cortez, born at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Cox delivered her on March 23 that year and posed for a photograph with the newborn and her mother, Isabel Luna. Twenty-five years later, on July 26, 2020, Cox was back in the delivery room at the same hospital. This time, the baby he delivered was Cortez’s son, Logan James. The reunion brought back the photograph from 1995. But instead of being the baby in her mother’s arms, Cortez was now holding her own newborn son.
The doctor who delivered a mother and then her son
According to CNN and various media reports, Cox had delivered more than 5,000 babies during his 33-year career. Yet the birth of Logan James became one of the reunions that stood out in his long association with patients. Cortez had first met Cox as a newborn. On March 23, 1995, he delivered her at Methodist Hospital, where he also took a photograph with her and Isabel Luna shortly after the birth. When Cortez gave birth to Logan on July 26, 2020, she was once again at the same hospital. Cox was there to deliver her baby.The two photographs, taken 25 years apart, captured the change in their relationship. In the first, Cox stood with a newborn Cortez and her mother. Recreating a photograph from 1995
The second photograph was taken during the COVID-19 pandemic, when hospital restrictions affected who could be present during childbirth. Cortez’s mother, Isabel Luna, could not be there for Logan’s birth because of the restrictions. That meant the new photograph could not include her in the same way as the original. Instead, Cortez recreated the picture with Cox, holding her newborn son. The image connected two different moments in her life: her own birth in 1995 and the birth of her first child in 2020. She shared the photographs online, and the story soon spread widely. The pictures showed Cox standing beside a mother he had delivered as a baby, now holding her own son.
“So, did I deliver you?”
For Cox, meeting patients he had delivered years earlier was not an unusual experience. Speaking to CNN, he said that he often asked younger patients whether he had delivered them. “Nowadays any patient who walks in less than 33 years old, I go, ‘So, did I deliver you?’” Cox said. He estimated that about one in seven patients answered yes.
The birthday song that continued
Cox also continued a tradition when Logan was born. He sang “Happy Birthday” to the baby, just as he had done for Cortez at her own birth. The song linked the two deliveries, separated by a quarter of a century. In 1995, Cox had sung it to a newborn Cortez. In 2020, he sang it to her son. For Cortez, the doctor was part of both occasions.
An unexpected family connection
After the photographs attracted attention online, Cortez discovered another connection between the two families. Cox’s wife was a distant relative of Logan on his father’s side of the family. That meant the story was not limited to a doctor delivering a mother and her son. There was also a family link that Cortez had not known about when she first shared the photographs. The discovery added another detail to a reunion that had already brought together two generations at the same hospital.
