The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has been taking steps to keep members informed and allow access for more information digitally. As part of this effort, the retirement fund body has asked members to follow its official WhatsApp channel for the latest updates and useful information concerning their provident fund accounts.The EPFO, in a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), said that members who join the WhatsApp channel can stay informed about the organisation’s latest updates.In its post on X, the EPFO said, “Join EPFO’s official WhatsApp Channel to get important updates and useful information. The EPFO’s official website provides members with information about several services, including EPF Advance, EPF withdrawal, UAN activation, claims and transfers, KYC, and pension-related facilities.The EPF scheme provides retirement savings along with tax-free interest growth, contributions from the employer and financial security for the family. Among its key features are a 12% contribution rate, online access to the EPF passbook, convenient transfer of accounts, nomination facilities and options to withdraw funds.
Many banks offer WhatsApp services
Several banks in India have introduced WhatsApp-based services through which customers can securely perform tasks such as checking account balances, downloading statements, managing cards and requesting various services at any time. To use these facilities, customers generally need to send a ‘Hi’ from the mobile number registered with their bank.In May, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) was reportedly working on plans to introduce its services through WhatsApp.A PTI report, citing Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, said the EPFO intended to use WhatsApp because of the messaging platform’s widespread use among mobile phone users across the country.
How EPF WhatsApp service will work
Under the proposed system, EPFO members would be able to initiate a conversation with the organisation by sending a ‘Hello’ message to its verified WhatsApp number, which would carry a green tick.Members would also be able to receive updates related to the EPFO directly on their registered mobile numbers. According to the report, the service would support local and regional languages, allowing users to communicate in a language they are more comfortable with.
Simpler withdrawal rules
Earlier this year, EPFO streamlined its partial PF withdrawal framework by consolidating 13 separate provisions into three broad categories: Essential Needs, Housing Needs and Special Circumstances.Under the revised rules, members can withdraw up to 100% of their eligible PF balance, while the withdrawal limits for education and marriage have also been increased. The minimum service requirement has been reduced to 12 months.Another key change is that members can seek a withdrawal under the ‘Special Circumstances’ category without having to provide a reason. The reform is intended to enable 100% auto-settlement of eligible claims, while keeping 25% of the PF balance invested for retirement.
Auto settlement limits
At present, members have to submit withdrawal applications, which can sometimes result in delays. With the auto-settlement facility, however, eligible withdrawal claims are processed electronically without manual intervention. Once the application is filed, subscribers can receive the money within three days.The EPFO has also raised the limit under the auto-settlement facility to Rs 5 lakh from Rs 1 lakh. The facility allows subscribers to access their funds within three days for requirements including marriage, education, illness and housing.
