Teeth grinding is rising among young people: Are you grinding your teeth without knowing it?

Ever wake up with a sore jaw and convince yourself you just slept funny? Maybe you greet the day with a dull headache that lifts only after coffee, or you wonder why cold drinks suddenly make your teeth sting. Sometimes the first clue comes from someone else: “Were you making that weird sound in your sleep?” What you might not realize is there’s something happening at night (or even when you’re stressed during the day): grinding and clenching your teeth, which dentists call bruxism.A recent BBC report has drawn attention to dentists around the world who say they are seeing more young people with signs of teeth grinding. Now, it’s not that some magic number proves a new epidemic, but there’s a real sense that the problem is growing. And in today’s pressure-cooker world, it makes sense: stress, anxiety, and sleepless nights are pretty much standard, especially for young adults.

Bruxism 101: What is it?

So, what exactly is bruxism? And how can you tell if it’s happening to you?Bruxism is all about your teeth (grinding, gnashing, clenching), and most of the time, you don’t know you’re doing it. It can happen while you’re wide awake (like clenching when you’re concentrating or stressed) or deep asleep (which is when it gets noisier). Some reports estimate that more than one in five people grind their teeth, and these numbers shift depending on how you actually measure it.

What causes it?

Stress is the obvious culprit, but it’s hardly the whole story. The NHS points to stress, anxiety, and bad sleep; add in caffeine, alcohol, even smoking. Sure enough, studies back up the link between stress and bruxism, but it’s messy. Other things like medicines, lifestyle, and the way your body’s wired play a role. Often, you’re clenching and grinding your teeth while rushing between tasks, stuck in traffic, or hunched over another late-night assignment, and you don’t even notice.

So what are the clues?

The grinding is subtle, but its traces are not. Waking up with a tired or sore jaw, nagging headaches, tooth sensitivity, or even teeth that look worn down or chipped — these all hint at bruxism. If your partner mentions you sound like you’re chewing gravel in your sleep, believe them. The NHS advises seeing a dentist if your teeth suddenly hurt, seem sensitive, or if someone else points out you’re grinding.Bruxism can aggravate jaw problems too, especially with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), where your jawbone connects to your skull. It doesn’t necessarily cause TMJ disorders (TMD), but it can definitely make things worse. When you’re tired, stressed, or not sleeping well, TMD gets more stubborn too.

Can grinding really damage your teeth?

It can, especially if you’re doing it a lot. When it’s frequent, all that pressure can wear your teeth down, crack them, make them more sensitive, and even cause pain. Still, not everyone who grinds their teeth needs a mouth guard or dental work. Dentists look for real damage before they suggest treatment. In many cases, the news that you grind your teeth doesn’t have to mean a costly intervention. So, if you suspect you’re one of those silent grinders, start by just paying attention. Check in with your jaw during the day. Are you clenching when you don’t need to? Better sleep, less stress, and cutting back on caffeine or alcohol might all help. If you’re worried, visit a dentist, as they can look for wear and talk you through next steps, including whether a night guard or splint might be worth it.But maybe the bigger lesson is: listen to your body and don’t just assume the aches will fix themselves. Sometimes, a clenched jaw is carrying the weight of stress your mind doesn’t want to admit. Teeth carry tension too. And with a bit of awareness, you can start to set that weight down, or at least share it with someone who can help.
