Moving to a new country for work often means adjusting to a different routine, food, language and way of doing things. For one European expat who moved to India, however, one of the more unexpected differences emerged not at work or while navigating daily life, but during conversations with people he had just met.The experience was shared online and has since drawn attention to a particular aspect of social interactions in India. The European expat spoke about his experience after moving to India for work, describing something he found striking about the way people introduce themselves and present their background.

‘People want to place you in a social hierarchy’

In the account shared on the r/india subreddit, the expat said he noticed that conversations could quickly move beyond the usual introductions. Rather than simply talking about themselves, some people would mention details about their education, profession, family background or other markers of status. What stood out to him was the sense that these details were being used to understand where a person stood socially. The expat described the experience as people wanting to “place you in a social hierarchy”.

The comment has prompted reactions online, with some people saying they recognised the behaviour he was describing, while others pointed out that introductions and social interactions can vary considerably depending on the setting, city and people involved.

The post sparked different reactions

The response online was not entirely one-sided. Some users agreed with the expat’s observation and said that people in India can sometimes be quick to establish someone’s social or professional standing.Others suggested that this behaviour should not be treated as universal. The way people introduce themselves can differ between workplaces, friend groups, cities and generations. The discussion also reflects one of the less obvious parts of moving abroad: cultural differences are not always found in major traditions or everyday practicalities. Sometimes, they appear in small interactions that people in the host country may consider completely ordinary. For the European expat, it was one such interaction that became an unexpected culture shock after moving to India.

Why introductions can carry more information

In many Indian conversations, a person’s introduction may include details that go beyond their name and profession. Questions about where someone studied, where they work, where their family is from or what their parents do can sometimes become part of an early conversation. For someone unfamiliar with these social cues, the amount of information exchanged can feel unusual. That appears to have been the expat’s larger observation: that introductions were not always just about getting to know an individual, but could also provide clues about their social and professional background. His experience has since become part of a wider online conversation about the differences foreigners notice after moving to India.
