Elon Musk’s former girlfriend Ashley St Clair has revealed that Musk once told her he wanted to have a child with her because he needed “a legion of children before the civil war”. St Clair made the claim while speaking at the Venice premiere of a new documentary about the billionaire, directed by filmmaker Alex Gibney. The comments have drawn attention because of Elon Musk’s long-standing focus on population growth, civilisational risks and his growing political influence through X (formerly Twitter). Ashley St Clair, who had a son with Musk in 2024, also accused him of creating division through the social media platform.
Elon Musk’s ‘legion of children’ message
Ashley St Clair said Elon Musk sent her a text message explaining why he wanted to have a child with her. According to her, he said he needed “a legion of children before the civil war”.The pair later had a son in 2024 but have since separated.In the documentary, St Clair also raised concerns about Musk’s use of X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Asked whether Musk was simply afraid of a civil war or was actively trying to encourage one, she said:“Whatever it is, what he’s doing with this platform on X cannot be ignored, because he is stoking flames that don’t exist in the real world.”She said Musk was using the platform in a way that could have consequences beyond social media. “He is creating something that is causing real world effects with all of these inputs on X,” St Clair said.The former Trump supporter also said she now regrets her earlier political activism. She argued that Elon Musk’s activity on X was contributing to division and warned about its possible consequences.“I do believe that he is causing deliberate division that may be catastrophic if it’s not regulated or tamed, or if we don’t do our part in putting it down,” she said.
What Alex Gibney says about Elon Musk
Filmmaker Alex Gibney, who has previously made documentaries about subjects including Enron, Vladimir Putin and the US military, also spoke about Musk at the Venice premiere. Gibney suggested that Musk’s focus on civilisational collapse could be linked to his childhood in South Africa.“He had a childhood that was very difficult and traumatic,” Gibney said. “To some extent he’s now playing out that trauma on the rest of us, if I were to psychoanalyse the situation.”The documentary was filmed over three years and follows Musk’s rise from an internet entrepreneur to a major figure in electric cars, rockets and technology, as well as his later involvement in US politics.Gibney described Elon Musk’s story as more than a traditional technology success story.“What I discovered was that the story of Musk was not a new tech story,” he said. “But his story is the story of an old wine in a new bottle. His story turns out to be the story of the confidence man, the stock pumper. His wealth and power comes from inflating stock.”
