Guarding Xi: Inside heightened security deployment
This will be Xi Jinping’s first India visit since 2016

NEW DELHI: From establishing temporary no-fly zones over his hotel to conducting checks for potential so-called CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) threats, President Xi Jinping’s security during his 24-hour visit to India is expected to reach an unprecedented scale. The security measures are attributed mainly to the perceived threat from a lone-wolf attack or even demonstrations by Tibetan activists. Beijing has warned specifically about the possible use of drones, banners, loudspeakers and balloons as tools for anti-China propaganda and sought effective measures to keep out low-altitude, small-size aerial objects and other UAVs.Xi will land in Delhi around noon on Saturday, accompanied by a 67-member govt entourage comprising senior political figures, diplomats, security officials and medical staff.“All security concerns and issues raised by foreign govts are being addressed as per MEA (ministry of external affairs) protocol in coordination with Delhi Police and other agencies,” said an official source requesting anonymity.Ten days before the visit, China flew in a planeload of cargo items including Xi’s car, Hongqi (red flag) state limousine, another backup car and communication equipment. India allows foreign delegations to carry their own communication equipment, subject to approval by department of telecommunications. Satellite communication equipment is not allowed. In the case of guns and ammunitions, while pistols are allowed, items like sub machine guns and anti-drone equipment cannot be imported and must be left with customs at the airport on arrival.
