A town beyond the end of the grid

White Cliffs is a tiny settlement in the semi arid plains of north western New South Wales, not far from the South Australian border. In the late 20th century, it was home to a few dozen people, many of them workers and their families associated with local mining and pastoral activities. Like many remote Australian communities, it sat far beyond the reach of the main electricity network. Running diesel generators was expensive, logistically challenging and environmentally costly, with fuel needing to be trucked in over long distances.In this context, solar power was an appealing alternative. The region enjoys plenty of sunshine for most of the year, with clear skies and high solar irradiance. If a system could be designed to reliably capture and convert that energy, it could reduce dependence on diesel and provide a more sustainable power source for critical services.

The birth of a solar experiment

The White Cliffs solar power station was envisaged as a demonstration project, a real world test of whether solar thermal technology could meet the needs of a remote community. Completed in 1981, the plant consisted of 14 parabolic dish collectors, each mounted on a tracking system that followed the sun across the sky. The dishes concentrated sunlight onto receivers that heated a working fluid, which in turn drove a generator to produce electricity. The system was connected to the local mini grid, supplying power to critical community infrastructure.The hospital, school and post office relied on the solar station for much of their electricity, as did 12 residential homes. Yet the plant ran successfully for more than a decade, drawing international attention and local pride.But the station closed by the mid-1990s due to changing energy policies and newer technology.
