In 2026, a Florida wildlife centre brought in critically endangered red-ruffed lemurs; the project is now helping restore their disappearing Madagascar rainforest

A wildlife centre in North Florida has welcomed two red-ruffed lemurs, turning encounters with the critically endangered animals into a way to support rainforest restoration thousands of miles away in Madagascar. The North Florida Wildlife Center in Lloyd, Jefferson County, is now home to four ruffed lemurs. Two of them, newly arrived red-ruffed lemur males, are being gradually introduced to their new surroundings and trained for the centre’s lemur encounter programme, according to WTXL and WCTV. But their role extends beyond educating visitors. The centre says proceeds and support generated through its animal encounters and conservation work help fund habitat restoration in Madagascar, including efforts to plant thousands of trees each year. Its stated goal is to plant more than 1,000 trees annually through its partnership with conservation organisation Green Again Madagascar.

From a Florida wildlife centre to a rainforest in Madagascar

The connection may seem unlikely: visitors in rural Florida meet lemurs, while conservationists on the other side of the world work to restore forests. But that link is central to the wildlife centre’s conservation model. Its programmes include a partnership with Green Again Madagascar, which works with Malagasy communities on rainforest restoration, biodiversity protection and livelihoods. The centre says visits, sponsorships and donations help support both the animals in its care and conservation projects in their native habitats. For the newly arrived lemurs, that means their presence in Florida can help draw attention, and funding, to the forests on which their wild counterparts depend.

Why the red-ruffed lemur needs the help

The red-ruffed lemur (Varecia rubra) is found naturally only in northeastern Madagascar, particularly the forests of the Masoala Peninsula. It is classified as Critically Endangered, with habitat loss and hunting among its major threats. The species is especially dependent on intact rainforest. Red-ruffed lemurs spend much of their lives high in the forest canopy and rely heavily on fruit. They also play an ecological role as pollinators, carrying pollen between plants as they feed. That makes the loss of mature rainforest particularly damaging. When forests are cleared or fragmented, the animals lose not only shelter but also the trees and food sources that sustain them.

The Florida lemurs are also conservation ambassadors

At North Florida Wildlife Center, the animals are intended to make that distant conservation crisis more tangible. The educational encounters give visitors an opportunity to learn about red-ruffed and other ruffed lemurs while understanding why protecting their natural habitat matters. The centre also sees the animals as an educational resource for local students, particularly in a rural part of Florida where such wildlife encounters can provide an experience outside the classroom. The new arrivals are still undergoing training and conditioning before they become fully involved in the encounter programme. Their journey, however, represents more than a new attraction. Each encounter offers a chance to connect people in Florida with a forest they may never see, and, ultimately, to help put some of that forest back.
