Billionaire media mogul Tyler Perry has offered to pay off an $17,827.96 property lien against an 81-year-old Illinois homeowner and give her an additional $25,000 in cash after her insurance company refused to pay for repairs following a burst pipe. Brenda Daurham, a resident of Markham, Illinois, was left with major damage to her home after a pipe under her kitchen sink burst on Valentine’s Day. Water flooded the kitchen and spread into nearby rooms, making the house unfit to live in. After the local fire department responded to the emergency, Daurham hired Excel Fire and Water Damage Restoration Services to clean up and repair the damage. She expected her long-standing home insurance policy to cover the costs. Instead, her insurer, Allstate, rejected the claim. The decision left an $17,827.96 restoration bill unpaid for months. Excel Fire and Water Damage Restoration Services eventually placed a mechanic’s lien on Daurham’s home with the Cook County Clerk on August 20.
An insurance denial turns into a property lien
According to People magazine, Daurham had paid her insurance premiums to Allstate for decades before the incident. After she filed a claim following the pipe burst, Allstate denied coverage, pointing to policy exclusions for gradual wear, tear and long-term seepage. The insurer did not consider the damage a sudden event covered by the policy. Excel Fire and Water Damage Restoration Services challenged Allstate’s decision, saying the incident was a sudden and accidental plumbing failure that should have been covered under the policy. As the disagreement between Allstate and the restoration company continued without a settlement, Daurham was left in the middle. She faced the possibility of further legal costs or foreclosure proceedings linked to the lien on her home. The case received wider attention after a local television report by Chicago’s CBS station, CBS News Chicago. The report showed Daurham’s displacement and the financial pressure caused by the unpaid restoration bill. Viewers soon shared the story on social media, tagging Tyler Perry and asking him to step in.
Tyler Perry steps in with financial relief
Within days of the broadcast, Perry responded to the public appeals. Reports from People magazine and Rolling Out said the filmmaker and actor agreed to pay the full $17,827.96 lien, removing the legal claim against Daurham’s property. Perry also promised an additional $25,000 in direct financial support. The money is intended to help Daurham cover living costs and deal with the disruption caused by being unable to live in her home while repairs continue. On social media, Perry also addressed Allstate directly. He questioned the company’s handling of the claim and expressed concern that an elderly customer who had paid for insurance for decades was left facing a property lien after an unexpected plumbing emergency. Allstate has not provided a detailed public explanation of the policy terms it used to deny Daurham’s claim. The company has said only that the matter remains under internal review. Neither Excel Fire and Water Damage Restoration Services nor Allstate issued further official comments on the dispute over the original restoration bill. Although the disagreement between the insurer and restoration company over who should pay the original costs remains unresolved, Perry’s financial support has removed the immediate legal threat to Daurham’s home.
