In 1918, three Indiana brothers opened a bicycle and tire shop; 108 years later, the same family still runs it, with six employees retiring after 40+ years and tenures reaching 50 years

An Indiana tyre and bicycle business started by three brothers in 1918 is still operating under the same family ownership 108 years later. The business has also built an unusually loyal workforce, with several employees staying for more than four decades. A report published by local news outlet The Addison Times highlights the business’s long history. Along with remaining in the same family for more than a century, the firm has kept a remarkably stable workforce. Six long-serving employees have retired after more than 40 years with the company, while some workers have stayed for as long as 50 years. The business was founded during the final months of the First World War, when three local brothers opened a small shop serving motorists and cyclists across rural Indiana.

Over a century of family ownership

Founded in 1918, the business first focused on repairing bicycle frames, fixing rubber inner tubes and fitting basic pneumatic tyres to early motorcars travelling on Midwestern roads. Over the decades, the shop expanded its services and adapted to major changes in the automotive and transport industries while staying connected to its original community. Ownership has been passed through several generations of the same family, preserving the founders’ original approach to running the business. This continuity has been matched by a workplace culture that encourages employees to stay for many years, creating a level of job stability that is uncommon in today’s retail and service industries. Data reported by The Addison Times shows how important employee loyalty has been to the company’s survival. Over the years, six different workers have retired after spending more than 40 years on the payroll.

Deep roots and half-century tenures

Some employees have shown an even greater level of loyalty, spending as long as 50 years with the business. These workers have seen generations of customers come and go, servicing cars and bicycles belonging to the children and grandchildren of the shop’s earliest customers. Local historians and business analysts say family-owned independent shops remain important parts of rural and small-town communities in America. Major retail chains and online businesses have replaced many independent service outlets across North America over the past 50 years. However, strong customer loyalty and experienced employees have helped this Indiana business continue operating successfully. The shop’s 108-year history has covered some of the biggest events and changes in American history, including the 1918 influenza pandemic, the Great Depression, the industrial effort during the Second World War and the rapid move towards digital shopping and electric transport.

Maintaining community ties

According to The Addison Times, the shop continues to combine traditional repair skills with modern diagnostic equipment. Employees who have worked there for many years have also helped train younger mechanics, passing on practical repair skills that may not always be taught through modern corporate training programmes. Reaching 108 years of continuous operation while remaining under one family’s ownership puts the Indiana business among a small group of historic American retail establishments.
