TOI correspondent from Washington: US President and MAGA supremo Donald Trump has turned his long-running campaign for lower interest rates into a stunning trade ultimatum: Cut borrowing costs, he warned, or Washington will stop trading with countries that have trade surplus with the US.Trump issued the threat through a social media post on Friday after a surprisingly strong jobs report showed US employers added 162,000 workers in August, more than five times the average monthly gain over the previous year. The unemployment rate stayed at 4.1%, allowing Trump to argue that the strength of the U.S economy should justify cheaper credit.“A STRONG COUNTRY MEANS A LOWER INTEREST RATE,” he wrote on Truth Social, demanding that the Federal Reserve have the “LOWEST RATE of any country in the World.” He then threatened to stop trading with countries with which the United States runs a deficit.The economic logic behind the threat reflects Trump’s longstanding view that US trade deficit is evidence that foreign countries are benefiting – “ripping off the US” in his words – at its expense. His argument appears to be that the US as the world’s largest economy and a supposedly superior credit risk, should be able to borrow more cheaply, while countries running trade surpluses with U.S should not be allowed to benefit from access to the US market without buying more American goods.But experts say trade deficits and interest rates are not directly linked in the way Trump’s argument suggests. A country’s trade balance is determined by a complex combination of savings, investment, fiscal policy, exchange rates and global demand. Cutting interest rates may stimulate domestic demand and weaken the dollar, potentially affecting trade, but it does not mechanically eliminate a bilateral trade deficit.This could matter enormously for India, with which the US ran a $58.4 billion goods deficit, while two-way goods trade totaled about $149 billion. Through the first seven months of 2026, the US goods deficit with India had reached $28.4 billion. If Trump’s threat were implemented, India would be among countries potentially caught in the crossfire: Indian exporters would lose access to their largest market, while US companies and consumers would have to find alternative suppliers for textiles, pharma, machinery, electronics and other goods.The Fed, meanwhile, has shown little inclination to deliver the rate cut Trump wants. The irony is that the Fed chairman Kevin Warsh is Trump’s own pick. But Warsh has emphasized that the central bank’s job is to bring inflation back to its fixed 2% target. And the latest jobs report gives the Fed little reason to panic about employment. The labor market remains relatively strong, while inflation is still well above target.That is why Trump’s threat creates an unusual policy collision: the president wants cheaper money to support growth and perhaps the dollar and trade position, while the central bank fears that cutting rates prematurely could reignite inflation. Nevertheless, Trump exhorted: “The Fed Board, with its great new leader, must get smart – BE PATRIOTS for a change. High interest rates put the USA at a very unfair disadvantage, and I won’t allow that to happen!”
