Russian companies have developed a modular metal structure designed to protect oil storage facilities, electrical substations and other critical infrastructure from drone attacks, as Ukrainian strikes continue to target Russia’s energy sector.Called “Web”, the system was developed by RT-Project Technologies, a subsidiary of state-owned defence and technology conglomerate Rostec, in partnership with Standard-Elektrik. The system was presented at a closed event in Tver.According to the developers, the basic version of the structure can withstand a direct impact from a drone weighing up to 200 kg and travelling at up to 250 kmph. The system can be installed around facilities more than 25 metres high and expanded to cover areas of virtually any size. The structure has completed field tests for seismic stability, while testing its ability to withstand strikes from different types of drones is still underway. It is currently undergoing trial operations at several fuel and energy facilities. The protective system consists of load-bearing columns, a network of power cables and supports. It uses bolted joints rather than welding, allowing installation in confined spaces and locations with heightened fire risks. The developers say this can reduce installation costs while making deployment faster and safer. The metal components are also treated with factory-applied hot-dip galvanizing to protect them against corrosion. The development comes as Ukrainian drones have repeatedly targeted Russian oil refineries, fuel depots and other energy infrastructure, with strikes causing fires and disrupting operations at some facilities. In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged that repeated Ukrainian attacks on oil refineries had contributed to fuel shortages. The new system also comes amid growing concern over the security of Russia’s energy infrastructure. Earlier this year, hackers gained access to a confidential Rosneft project concerning measures to protect the company’s facilities from Ukrainian drone attacks.
