Amazon cutting 150 jobs at its Northern California offices; here’s what company’s notice filed with the Employment Development Department says

Amazon is eliminating roughly 150 roles across its Northern California locations, according to official regulatory filings submitted to state labor authorities. The e-commerce and cloud giant filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) with California’s Employment Development Department which details that the job losses include 78 roles at Amazon’s Bush Street location in San Francisco and 70 positions at its Sunnyvale office. All of the designated cuts are permanent, with affected staff scheduled to exit the company by October 20.While the state filings did not outline a formal explanation for the specific Bay Area cuts, company spokesperson Brad Glasser noted that internal teams routinely evaluate operational configurations to confirm they align with core milestones, as per a report by Kron4, the Bay Area’s local news station.“As part of these reviews, teams sometimes determine that certain roles are no longer necessary. We don’t take these decisions lightly, and we’re always committed to supporting employees whose roles are impacted by them,” Glasser was quoted as saying.

Broader corporate downsizing at Amazon

The California staff reductions follow widespread downsizing across Amazon’s white-collar footprint over the past year. Since October 2025, Amazon has eliminated approximately 30,000 corporate positions across two large reduction cycles under CEO Andy Jassy’s initiative to trim bureaucratic layers and flatten internal managerial tiers.It is to be noted that previous state Department of Labor records indicate that 135 corporate employees based in New York City were issued layoff notices in January 2026, alongside an additional 165 workers terminated in the state.Reportedly, internal tensions surfaced publicly in June during a contentious Seattle City Council meeting, where company software engineers accused leadership of cutting tens of thousands of corporate workers while channeling historic sums into artificial intelligence compute infrastructure.During the session, Amazon Web Services software engineer Patrick Schloesser highlighted that the firm is directing $200 billion toward capital investments this year, with the vast majority earmarked for artificial intelligence and cloud server hubs, a report by the New York Post said.Amazon is not the only technology firm trimming its headcount in the area. Semiconductor design company Synopsys also announced plans to eliminate 128 positions at its primary corporate facilities in Sunnyvale, with those job terminations scheduled to take effect on December 16.
