Another milestone in a major Hurricane Helene recovery project in Southwest Virginia, as the replacement Route 1212 bridge opens to traffic in Damascus on September 1. According to reports, the bridge across Laurel Creek was one of hundreds of transportation structures damaged in the powerful storm that hit the region in September 2024. Drivers on the new bridge, which is now finished, are being told to be careful while work continues to finish off around the site, states an online report by the Virginia Department of Transportation. It has been reported that Hurricane Helene left more than 500 sites needing repair at an estimated cost of $195.5 million across the Bristol District in a huge cleanup and rebuilding job. The damage included 394 structures including bridges and culverts. The storm did so much damage that five bridges needed to be completely replaced, a testament to the incredible force of the flooding and winds that ripped through Southwest Virginia. One such structure was the Route 1212 bridge in Damascus. The old bridge was damaged on a local level as well. The power of the storm ripped the concrete structure from its foundation and toward the shore of Laurel Creek.
A bridge powered by the force of the storm
The destruction was unusual, and showed the extreme power of Hurricane Helene. The movement of the bridge was a demonstration of how floodwaters and the strength of the storm can overcome even the strongest infrastructure. Transportation officials have said the incident is a particularly vivid example of the damage Helene has dealt across the region. The replacement project was part of an effort to restore transportation connections and repair storm-damaged infrastructure.
Hundreds of buildings needed to be repaired
The 394 affected structures included bridges and culverts, as well as sites requiring erosion repairs, debris removal and other structural rehabilitation. In the end five bridges needed complete replacement. Crews also replaced the Route 859 bridge at Konnarock in Washington County, the Route 725 bridge at Taylors Valley in Washington County, the Route 847 bridge in Grayson County and the Route 800, or St. Clair Creek Road, bridge in Smyth County, in addition to the Route 1212 bridge in Damascus. The recovery operation also included the replacement of four culverts.
Recovery continues throughout Southwest Virginia
With the opening of the Route 1212 replacement, all Hurricane Helene repair and replacement projects are complete in the Bristol District. The new bridge restores a key local transportation link, but crews will remain in the area to complete work at the site. Motorists are therefore advised to exercise caution and be on the lookout for construction personnel and equipment. Reopening is also a big step in recovering from one of the most destructive recent storms in Southwest Virginia. A year after Helene swept through the area, the Route 1212 bridge is a lasting reminder of the storm’s extraordinary power and the scale of the infrastructure effort needed to rebuild.
