NEW DELHI: The BJP and Congress on Tuesday traded sharply contrasting assessments of India’s economy after official data showed GDP growth of 7.8 per cent in the April-June 2026 quarter. While the BJP hailed the performance as evidence of resilient economic management, the Opposition questioned whether the growth has translated into jobs, higher incomes and wider prosperity.BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad held a press conference where he described the latest growth figures as “particularly significant”. He argued that India had expanded rapidly despite heightened geopolitical and economic uncertainty during the quarter, including the Gulf crisis, disruptions to oil supplies and supply-chain pressures.“Today is a very encouraging day. The latest report shows that India’s GDP growth stood at 7.8 per cent in the April-June 2026 quarter. The figure of 7.8 per cent is particularly significant because, during this period, the Gulf crisis had intensified. There were concerns over oil supplies, disruptions in supply chains, and uncertainty across the global economy. Despite all these challenges, India’s economy grew by 7.8 per cent,” Prasad said at a press conference in Delhi.Prasad also compared India’s performance with growth recorded by several other major economies, saying Canada grew by around 1.5 per cent, Germany by 1 per cent, the UK by 2.1 per cent, Malaysia by about 6 per cent, South Korea by around 3.7 per cent and the US by roughly 2 per cent during the same period.He attributed India’s performance to what he called effective economic management and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.“Today, I would like to congratulate and commend India’s economic management. I also wholeheartedly congratulate the honourable Prime Minister for his vision, wisdom and leadership,” Prasad said.The Congress, however, challenged the BJP’s interpretation of the GDP figures, arguing that headline growth alone does not adequately capture the economic conditions faced by ordinary Indians.Congress leader Pawan Khera questioned how the 7.8 per cent growth figure was benefiting young people and farmers, while also pointing to concerns over employment, manufacturing, education and income distribution.“The Prime Minister comes up with a reel, a video. Ask him: the largest demographic in this country is the youth. How does this GDP growth affect the youth? How does it address the issues that young people face? The largest occupation in this country is agriculture. How does this GDP growth affect the agricultural sector? If it doesn’t benefit these two sectors, how does it affect the dwindling manufacturing sector? Look at the manufacturing data. So, what is he even talking about? A handful of people contribute to the growth of this country, but where is the redistribution of income? Where is the distribution of income? So, let’s talk about these fundamental issues. 80 per cent of this country depends on free ration. Is that what good GDP growth does for the country? That’s our question.”Khera had earlier taken his criticism to X, arguing that a single quarter of strong GDP growth should not be treated as evidence of broad-based economic prosperity.“One quarter of 7.8% growth is not an economic spring. If India has truly “bloomed,” why do rampant unemployment, leaked exam papers, and a crumbling education system define the ground reality? Why is the republic’s prosperity not translating into the prosperity of its public? GDP measures national output – not jobs, not wages, not opportunity. If it measured any of those, the future of India’s youth would not look so bleak. Modi can manage his headlines. For India’s youth, the question remains the same as ever: Where are the jobs?”At his press conference, Khera also questioned whether the strong GDP reading had resulted in tangible improvements in the cost of living and employment conditions.“On one hand, they say, “Look at the GDP of a single quarter and applaud.” On the other, they say, “Don’t buy gold, don’t host lavish weddings.” They themselves sit abroad while telling the country’s citizens not to travel overseas and to save money. 80% of the population relies on free rations, but keep applauding… Regarding this 7.8% figure—what benefit is the country’s largest sector, agriculture, deriving from it? The youth constitute the country’s largest demographic; what benefit are they getting? Have their issues been resolved? Have milk prices dropped? Is there no longer a need for free rations? Have you rectified the employment situation to reverse the 45-year record low? Is manufacturing back on track? What happened to the MSME sector? What happened to the unorganized sector? If you have answers showing a positive outcome, then we, too, will applaud.
