Nassau County Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped a Florida resident at a retail parking lot on Thursday, preventing him from handing over $14,000 to phone scammers. The intervention took place at a Lowe’s home improvement store on State Road 200 after the man’s wife overheard a suspicious phone call at their home. Worried by the pressure being put on her husband, she immediately contacted local law enforcement. Deputies arrived in the area and found the man sitting in his vehicle, preparing to follow the caller’s instructions to buy thousands of dollars in gift cards.
Interception in retail parking lot
According to a public report by local news outlet Action News Jax, the scammer had told the victim to purchase $14,000 worth of gift cards within two hours. The caller warned that failing to meet the deadline would result in the man’s personal accounts being hacked and compromised. Deputies reached the resident in the parking lot before he could enter the store or give the gift card codes to the scammer. Officers spoke with him, calmed the situation and explained how the caller was trying to trick him. The intervention protected the man’s money and stopped any payment from being made.
Surge in regional fraud cases
The incident comes as financial scams continue to rise across northern Florida. Figures from the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office show that reported fraud cases have increased by about 80 per cent since 2021. Sheriff’s office records show deputies responded to 126 fraud cases in 2021. That figure rose to 227 cases in 2025. Data from the current year shows that officers in the county have already investigated at least 174 fraud complaints. The figures reflect a wider national trend recorded by the Federal Trade Commission, which says gift card payments remain one of the most common ways used by domestic and international scammers.
Common tactics and warning signs
In a public safety warning after the incident, the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office listed several signs that can indicate a financial scam. Authorities stressed that legitimate businesses, police departments and government agencies will never demand immediate payment through store gift cards, wire transfers, peer-to-peer payment services such as Cash App, or cryptocurrency.Deputies warned residents to look out for several common pressure tactics:
- Urgency and strict deadlines: Scammers often create fake emergencies and give victims only minutes or hours to act, leaving little time to think or check the claims.
- Threats of legal or financial action: Callers may pretend to be officials and threaten immediate account suspension, large fines or arrest.
- Unusual payment methods: Requests for gift cards, prepaid debit cards or digital money transfers are major warning signs of fraud.
- Requests for sensitive information: Scammers may ask for PINs, passcodes or banking details while pretending they need the information for security checks.
Police advise anyone who receives a suspicious payment request to end the call immediately. Residents should then contact their local police department or the relevant agency using an official phone number to check whether the claim is genuine.

The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to take extra care when receiving unexpected phone calls, text messages or emails. Police advise people not to click links in unverified messages or provide personal information over the phone.
