A piece of Chesapeake Bay marshland that once formed part of an aviation pioneer’s private hunting preserve has become an important refuge for wildlife. What began as a donation of thousands of acres more than seven decades ago now protects tidal marshes, creeks, coves and wooded ridges used by migratory birds throughout the year. The landscape is part of a larger story of how privately held land can become a lasting habitat when it is placed under conservation management. Today, the refuge provides seasonal shelter for waterfowl, nesting grounds for numerous birds and habitat for mammals, reptiles and marine species, while also preserving a distinctive part of the Chesapeake Bay’s natural landscape. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service records that Martin National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1954 after Glenn L. Martin donated 2,569 acres to the Service.
From private preserve to refuge
The refuge occupies the northern half of Smith Island, about 11 miles west of Crisfield, Maryland, along with Watts Island farther south in the Chesapeake Bay. Its landscape is dominated by tidal marsh, with a network of creeks and coves, freshwater potholes and slightly elevated ridges supporting shrubs and trees. Offshore shallow waters also contain submerged aquatic vegetation, which provides an important food source for waterfowl. When Martin donated the property in 1954, the goal was no longer simply to preserve land for private recreation. The newly established refuge was intended to provide habitat for wildlife, particularly birds that depend on the Chesapeake Bay during migration and winter.The refuge’s size has increased considerably since its creation. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Martin National Wildlife Refuge now spans 4,548 acres, following additional land purchases and donations over the years.
A seasonal haven for birds
The refuge’s marshes and protected waters make it particularly valuable to migratory birds. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service describes the area as an important resting and wintering site for thousands of waterfowl. Winter visitors include black ducks, pintails, mergansers, long-tailed ducks, scoters, buffleheads, Canada geese and tundra swans. Historical records show that wintering waterfowl populations at the refuge could be substantial. The refuge has historically supported large numbers of wintering waterfowl, including ducks, Canada geese and tundra swans. These populations illustrate why protecting the marsh and surrounding shallow waters became an important part of refuge management.The habitat is not only important in winter. During spring and summer, marsh grasses, insects and underwater vegetation attract ducks including black ducks, mallards, gadwalls and green-winged teal for nesting. Gulls, terns, black skimmers, American oystercatchers and willets also use the marshes, mudflats and sandbars.
Beyond waterfowl
Although migratory waterfowl are central to the refuge’s purpose, the protected landscape supports a much broader community of wildlife. Wooded ridges provide nesting locations for wading birds, while groups of herons, egrets and glossy ibis have established nesting colonies. Several species, including glossy ibis, little blue herons, tricoloured herons and several egret species, have been observed in rookeries on the refuge. Martin National Wildlife Refuge also supports the largest colony of brown pelicans in Maryland’s portion of Chesapeake Bay.The marshes are home to mammals including red foxes, muskrats, mink, otters and voles. Northern diamondback terrapins and various nonvenomous water snakes also inhabit the area. Clapper rails, seaside sparrows and marsh wrens depend on the marsh habitat, while peregrine falcons have nested at the refuge since the installation of a nesting tower in 1984.
A refuge shaped by the bay
The conservation value of Martin National Wildlife Refuge extends beyond birds and land animals. Its marshes and estuarine waters contribute to the Chesapeake Bay food web, supporting marine organisms such as crabs and oysters. The refuge is therefore part of a much larger ecological system in which wetlands, shallow waters, vegetation and wildlife are closely connected. The land also carries a long human history. Smith Island was explored and charted by Captain John Smith in 1608, while settlers later raised cattle on parts of the island. For more than three centuries, island communities have depended on Chesapeake Bay resources, particularly oysters and crabs. Evidence of old livestock corrals and low dikes built to hold back tides remains visible in parts of the landscape.What began with Martin’s 2,569-acre donation has therefore become more than a preserved piece of land. Expanded to 4,548 acres, Martin National Wildlife Refuge now protects a changing mosaic of marshes, waterways and ridges that wildlife uses throughout the year. Its history demonstrates how a single land donation can eventually become part of a much larger conservation legacy, one that continues to provide habitat for thousands of migratory birds and other species along the Chesapeake Bay.
