Meet Reyha Raghavaraju, the 16-year-old Georgia student who turned her love of baking into birthday celebrations for more than 136 families in need across metro Atlanta
A birthday cake can seem like a small thing, a kind gesture. But for a child whose family is struggling to make ends meet, having one can mean far more than a slice of cake and a candle. Sixteen-year-old Reyha Raghavaraju saw that firsthand at a food distribution event in Georgia. She noticed a child wearing a birthday hat, but there was no birthday celebration waiting for them.The sight stayed with her. “This one kid was wearing a birthday hat,” Raghavaraju said. “And then I asked him what he was doing for his birthday and he’s like, ‘I’m here,'” she told CBS News. The Alpharetta teenager who loved baking, began wondering if something as simple as a homemade cake could help children in families facing financial hardship feel celebrated on their special day.That question eventually became Birthday Bundles, a youth-led initiative through which Raghavaraju has helped bring birthday celebrations to more than 136 families across metro Atlanta.
She started with what she already loved

Reyha did not set out to build a large charitable organisation. She started with something she already knew and enjoyed doing, baking. Instead of simply donating food, she began creating birthday packages designed to make the occasion feel like a real celebration. The packages can include homemade cakes or cupcakes, gifts and handwritten birthday cards. Raghavaraju said each bundle is created with the recipient in mind, including age-appropriate gifts and a personalised message.For a child, the difference can be significant. A cake means candles to blow out. A gift means something to unwrap. A handwritten card means somebody has taken the time to think about them. Her goal was not to create elaborate birthday parties or expensive celebrations. It was to make sure that financial difficulties did not completely take away the experience of being celebrated.“I think the hallmark of Birthday Bundles is what we do for every single bundle: we have a handwritten card,” Raghavaraju said. “So our handwritten cards, we write them all by hand.”
From one celebration to 136 families
Birthday Bundles gradually expanded. As more people learned about the teenager’s work, volunteers joined her. The effort now involves around a dozen volunteers and has reached more than 136 families in the metro Atlanta area, according to CBS News Atlanta.Fourteen-year-old Saira Sharma, Raghavaraju’s longtime friend and neighbour, is one of the young volunteers helping prepare the cakes and bundles. The organisation currently works with three shelter partners, including Covenant House Georgia. One recent delivery included a homemade cake and birthday bundle prepared for young people served by the organisation.Raghavaraju said the experience has changed the way she thinks about something many families may take for granted. “To me, what was shocking is that they didn’t get something as simple as a birthday celebration,” she said.Birthday Bundles is now looking for additional volunteer bakers, donations and shelter partners as it works to expand beyond its current North Fulton volunteer base.A homemade cake may last only a few days. A present may eventually be outgrown. A cupcake will be eaten. But the feeling of being remembered can last much longer. For a child who might otherwise have had an ordinary day, receiving a birthday package can send a simple message: your birthday matters, and so do you.
