Happy Raksha Bandhan 2026: Bhadra kaal, shubh muhurat, puja vidhi and rules to tie Rakhi on brother’s hand
When should you tie Rakhi? Check shubh muhurat and puja vidhi

Raksha Bandhan is one of the most auspicious festivals that celebrates the unique relationship between brothers and sisters. It falls on a full moon day, or Purnima Tithi, that occurs in the month of Shravana. In 2026, Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on a Friday, August 28. On this day, sisters all across India will tie the sacred Rakhi thread on their brothers’ wrists and pray for their welfare. While Raksha Bandhan is indeed all about the exchange of gifts, the timing of the ritual is also considered to be of great significance. According to the Hindu Panchang, tying the Rakhi should be done during an auspicious time and must be avoided during Bhadra Kaal. In order to determine an auspicious time to tie the Rakhi, it is important to consult the Panchang.

Raksha Bandhan 2026 date and Purnima Tithi

Raksha Bandhan 2026 will be celebrated on August 28. According to Drik Panchang calculations, Shravana Purnima Tithi will begin at around 9:08 AM on August 27 and will end at 9:48 AM on the following day, August 28. Hence since the auspicious time to perform the Rakhi ceremony lies on August 28 (after Bhadra), Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on a Friday. It must be noted that the sunrise and ceremony timing may vary from city to city. For instance, according to Panchang, the Rakhi ceremony is said to be performed between 6:23 AM to 9:48 AM in Maharashtra on Raksha Bandhan 2026. Hence, in order to ensure accuracy, it is best to check the Raksha Bandhan 2026 date and time according to your city.

Bhadra Kaal on Raksha Bandhan 2026

Bhadra Kaal is an inauspicious time for performing religious rituals. In the case of Raksha Bandhan, Panchang experts suggest that the Rakhi ceremony must be avoided completely during Bhadra. Bhadra Kaal will end before sunrise on August 28, which means that the Rakhi ceremony is not recommended on this day. However, there is an auspicious window of time after sunrise on August 28 for tying the Rakhi. This is also the reason why Raksha Bandhan 2026 will be celebrated on August 28 even though the Purnima Tithi commenced on August 27. The Rakhi ceremony must be performed only after Bhadra Kaal has ended, as per the Panchang.

Raksha Bandhan 2026 shubh muhurat

It must be noted that the Raksha Bandhan ceremony timings vary from city to city. For instance, in Maharashtra, Raksha Bandhan 2026 is said to be performed after sunrise between 6:23 AM to 9:48 AM.It is recommended to choose an auspicious shubh muhurat after sunrise and before Bhadra Kaal (as per Panchang) for performing the Rakhi ceremony. In addition to this, people who follow a certain regional Panchang or family tradition may also refer to it before performing the ritual.

Raksha Bandhan puja vidhi

The Raksha Bandhan ritual can be performed in a hassle-free manner. Here’s a simple Raksha Bandhan puja vidhi:First of all, prepare a puja area and make sure to keep the necessary items in a puja thali. A traditional Rakhi thali consists of Rakhi, roli (kumkum), rice grains, sandal paste, diya, sweets and flowers. In addition to these items, some people also keep a kalash in addition to other puja supplies. Both the brother and sister should offer prayers to their favorite deity and seek their blessings. The sister can apply tilak on her brother’s forehead and put a few grains of rice on the tilak. Now, the sister can tie the Rakhi around her brother’s wrist while chanting a prayer for his health, welfare and happiness. The brother then accepts the Rakhi and gives his sister a gift in return. In addition to this, the sister and her brother also exchange sweets and take blessings from elders. It is important to note that the Raksha Bandhan ceremony must be performed in a stress-free and positive manner.

Rules to follow while tying Rakhi

  • There are several rules to be kept in mind while tying Rakhi. Some of the most important rules include:
  • Since Bhadra Kaal is considered to be an inauspicious time, the Rakhi ceremony must be avoided. As per Panchang, the Rakhi should be tied only after Bhadra has ended.
  • The sister should make sure that the Rakhi is kept in the thali along with other puja items before the shubh muhurat. The sister must sit in front of the brother while performing the tilak and Rakhi ceremony according to one’s family tradition.
  • It is essential to start the Rakhi ceremony with a smile and positive mindset. It is also advised to make sure that the Rakhi is tied comfortably rather than making it too tight.
  • Although different regions and families may follow different customs, it is important not to overdo the festival. Simply follow the family tradition in order to observe Raksha Bandhan in true spirit.
