JAMMU: Six people died and three others, including an 11-year-old boy, were injured after the vehicle they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Surankote in J&K’s Poonch district on Wednesday.The accident occurred around 5.30pm. Officials suspected the driver had lost control of the vehicle, which rolled into the gorge, killing six occupants — Mohd Shafiq (32), Nazakat Hussain (34), Sheraz Ahmed (30), Musarat Naz (19), Mohd Fareed (21), and Zulfat Bi (25) — on the spot, police said.

Upon receiving information, cops reached the spot and launched a rescue operation with the help of locals. Poonch chief medical officer Dr Parvaiz Ahmed Khan pressed ambulances into service to facilitate evacuation. The injured were initially admitted to a local health facility, from where two were shifted to GMC Jammu due to their critical condition, Dr Khan said.All victims and injured were residents of Seri Chouhana, police said, adding that the bodies were shifted to Poonch district hospital.J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condoled the tragedy in an X post, stating that he had directed the district administration to provide immediate assistance to the affected families. Poonch deputy commissioner Ashok Kumar Sharma and other senior civil administrative officials visited the hospital.
