Volkswagen CEO addresses employees for the first time since details of mass layoff plan and factory closures made public; makes a ‘promise’ amid loud booing
Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume faced opposition from employees in Wolfsburg this week. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, this criticism came as he addressed more than 10,000 workers for the first time since details of the carmaker’s restructuring plans, including potential job cuts and factory closures, became public. His speech was met with boos from the crowd, while workers displayed banners including “Our jobs are not your balance sheet adjustments” and “Respect is not up for negotiation”.Blume used the meeting to defend the restructuring plan and reassure workers that factory closures were not a settled decision. He said the 50,000 potential job cuts being discussed were a theoretical benchmark for bringing Volkswagen‘s costs closer to those of competitors and said plant closures would be the “last and most expensive resort”. “Our plan for the future is the largest transformation programme in our company’s history. To make this happen, everyone needs to pull together now,” Blume said in Wolfsburg’s packed Hall 11, the Reuters report noted.
Volkswagen job cuts put Blume under pressure
The Reuters report noted that Blume has argued that Volkswagen needs to reduce costs and simplify its operations as the company faces stronger competition from Chinese automakers, higher tariffs and weaker demand for its vehicles. He has warned that as many as 50,000 jobs could need to be eliminated, roughly twice the number of redundancies already agreed with unions.The company is also reviewing its model range and production capacity as part of the restructuring. However, Volkswagen’s labour representatives and political stakeholders still contest the scale and timing of the changes.Volkswagen labour leader Daniela Cavallo reiterated her opposition to factory closures while speaking for the workforce at the Wolfsburg meeting.“Our trust in this company’s executive board, and especially in its CEO Oliver Blume, has been damaged. Not yet beyond repair, but damaged nonetheless,” she said, according to excerpts of her speech shared by the works council.Cavallo also said German factories remained “an integral part” of Volkswagen, Reuters reportedIG Metall union representative Thorsten Groeger said after the meeting: “Cooperation is possible, but if VW management chooses only to pursue a path of layoffs and cutbacks, we will oppose it with all our might.”The disagreement comes ahead of Volkswagen’s supervisory board meeting on September 4, when Blume will seek support for his restructuring plans after failing to secure the necessary backing at the board’s July meeting.
Volkswagen factories face uncertain futures
Blume told employees that no decision had been made to close factories. He described closures as the “last and most expensive resort” and pointed to other possible ways of dealing with excess production capacity at German sites.Options previously discussed by management include partnerships with the defence sector and moving production of some models currently manufactured for the Chinese market to Europe.No agreement has been announced on those alternatives. Volkswagen’s plant in Osnabrueck is expected to stop automotive production as early as next year, while the Emden, Zwickau, Neckarsulm and Hanover plants currently lack clear production prospects from 2030.The uncertainty has added to the dispute between management and labour representatives over how Volkswagen should reduce costs without undermining its German manufacturing network.
Volkswagen board faces rival restructuring proposals
The dispute is also reaching Volkswagen’s supervisory board. Labour representatives and Lower Saxony, one of the carmaker’s major stakeholders, have submitted alternative proposals for turning around the company, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters.The contents of those proposals were not disclosed. Volkswagen’s supervisory board, works council and Lower Saxony did not comment. The competing plans underline the disagreement over the scale of Volkswagen’s restructuring as the September 4 board meeting approaches.Volkswagen’s ownership structure makes the dispute particularly significant. The company is controlled through a combination of the Porsche and Piëch families and other political and shareholder interests. At the same time, Lower Saxony holds a major stake and has representation in the company’s governance.For Blume, the next supervisory board meeting will determine whether he can secure enough support to advance the restructuring plan.
