Elon Musk’s SpaceX has announced its plans to build its largest rocket launch complex in southern Louisiana, a $100 billion project which claims to transform costal wetlands into a critical base for Starship and AI satellite launches. SpaceX posted about this announcement on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), “Introducing Starbase, Louisiana – a high-cadence launch site that will enable Starship to open a pathway to the stars for humanity. Thank you to @LAGovJeffLandry and the great people of Louisiana for all of their support as we work together on this audacious project,” wrote the company. As reported by Reuters, the 125,000-acre site on Pecan Island, named Starbase Louisiana, expands the company’s Starship operations beyond Texas and Florida as the next-generation rocket nears late-stage development.
SpaceX claims Louisiana campus to support thousands of Starship flights annually
As reported by Reuters, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell said that the upcoming Louisiana campus of the company will eventually support thousands of Starship flights annually, however, the pace depends of overcoming engineering and regulatory hurdles. The company also revealed that the construction for the new SpaceX base will begin from 2029. The “self-sustaining” spaceport will include methane production for propellant, power generation, deep-water shipping for Starship transport, vehicle processing facilities, and potentially an airport.
Environmental and legal context
The marshland site, more than eight times the size of Manhattan, will preserve large portions of natural wetlands. The project follows the dismissal of a decade-long lawsuit against ExxonMobil over wetland loss, clearing the way for SpaceX’s plans. Shotwell emphasised environmental stewardship, pledging restoration of Pecan Island’s marshlands and coastline, which serve as natural flood buffers.
Jobs and economic impact
Governor Jeff Landry hailed the project as a boost for Louisiana’s economy, promising over 3,000 jobs with average salaries of $92,600, nearly double Vermilion Parish’s median wage. “It represents jobs for our families, momentum for our communities, and protection for our coast,” Landry said.
Strategic role for Starship
The Louisiana site will be SpaceX’s fourth U.S. launch facility and its second Starbase campus. Unlike Texas, it will not produce rockets but will focus on launches. CEO Elon Musk sees Starship as central to expanding the Starlink constellation and deploying up to 1 million AI satellites in orbit. Pecan Island’s location allows launches south over the Gulf of Mexico into sun-synchronous orbit, ideal for solar-powered satellites.
