The incident came just days after newly appointed England captain Joe Root had called for greater responsibility from the players.The England Cricket Regulator is investigating the matter, putting the spotlight back on the off-field behaviour of the men’s squad and prompting questions over whether the team needs another cultural reset.Former England captain Alastair Cook believes the players need to exercise better judgement rather than necessarily abandon socialising altogether.“Just have some kind of brain cells amongst you, seeing what’s just gone on,” Cook said on the Stick to Cricket podcast released Tuesday. “Surely someone says either don’t go to that place, or at 12 a.m. or 1 a.m. say, ‘Let’s go and find ourselves somewhere quieter if we want to carry on.”
Brook’s club incident set the alarm bells ringing
The concerns are not new. England’s problems with late-night behaviour began making headlines during their white-ball tour of New Zealand in October last year.A day before the third and final ODI, captain Harry Brook was hit by a bouncer after being denied entry to a club in Wellington. Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue were also present during the night out.Brook was fined around £30,000 and given a final warning, although the sanctions only became public months later.“I want to apologise for my actions,” Brook said. “I fully accept that my behavior was wrong and brought embarrassment to both myself and the England team.”
Duckett and Stokes added to growing concerns
During the Ashes series in Australia, Ben Duckett’s night out in Noosa also attracted attention after footage showed the England opener appearing disorientated and telling people he could not remember how to return to his hotel.“I am sorry for that incident, it was not professional and shouldn’t have happened,” Duckett later said. “There is no hiding away from it.”England managing director Rob Key subsequently said he would investigate the team’s drinking habits.The controversy intensified after England’s home Test series against New Zealand. Following victory in the first Test at Lord’s, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson continued celebrations with a night out in London. A member of England’s security staff was reportedly struck by a Saracens rugby player during the evening.Stokes and Atkinson were left out of the second Test while the incident was investigated. The investigation ultimately found no “regulatory breach”, but the episode added to the growing scrutiny surrounding England’s off-field culture.Stokes later announced his retirement from international cricket during the third Test, saying the previous few months had “taken its toll”. Carse incident brings scrutiny back
Carse’s latest incident technically occurred while he was on domestic duty with Durham rather than with England. He had been released from the England squad to play against Derbyshire after not being selected for the first Test against Pakistan.However, Carse was subsequently retained in the squad for the second Test before being dropped on Monday as the investigation into the incident continued.According to Britain’s Press Association, Carse was briefly arrested after the incident. England bowler Matthew Potts was also with him on the night out, while footage circulating on social media showed Stokes watching as Carse was held in handcuffs.The repeated incidents have revived the debate over England’s drinking culture, with the central question no longer simply whether players should celebrate after matches, but whether a highly professional sporting setup needs clearer boundaries around how and where those celebrations take place.
