'I thought I was crushing it': Bengaluru techie earning ₹1.8 lakh/month says ICU emergency exposed his financial reality

There is a particular kind of financial confidence that comes with a healthy salary slip, a gated society address and a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) that grows every month without fail. It looks like security. It rarely is.A Bengaluru techie earning ₹1.8 lakh a month found this out on a random Tuesday two years ago, not through a market crash or a job loss, but through an ICU admission.

The night the numbers stopped adding up

In a Reddit post titled “I was living like a fake rich techie making ₹1.8L/month, until an ICU emergency exposed how broke I actually was,” the user described a life that, on paper, looked settled. He lived in a gated society, invested ₹80,000 every month through SIPs and believed, in his own words, that he was “crushing it.”Then his father collapsed. The hospital asked for a ₹2.5 lakh deposit before admitting him to the ICU. No delay, no instalments, just an upfront number. That is where the plan broke down. His main credit card was already maxed out from a laptop purchase. His savings account held barely ₹32,000. His mutual funds, the ₹80,000 a month he had been so disciplined about, were not liquid. Redemption timelines and delays involving the third-party administrator (TPA) meant that money he technically owned was money he could not touch that night.“I spent 1:30 AM frantically calling distant relatives to borrow cash via UPI while sitting in a cold hospital hallway,” he wrote. What the post captures, more than a personal financial slip, is a gap that many young earners do not notice until it is tested. Income and liquidity are not the same thing. A high salary can fund an impressive portfolio while leaving almost nothing accessible within the hour. “Earning a high salary meant nothing when I had zero liquid cash,” the techie wrote.

What readers said

The thread quickly turned into an informal financial literacy lesson. One user wrote that emergency funds are meant to be built before aggressive investing begins, adding that six months of living expenses should sit untouched in liquid form, alongside adequate health insurance and a term plan. “This is like ABC level basics of finance,” they wrote, noting that even they had made similar mistakes early on.Another was more direct: “bro after everything goes normal book a session with some good financial advisor to manage your funds.”A third summed up the core lesson without much elaboration: “High income doesn’t mean financial security. Always keep a decent emergency fund liquid, even if it slows down my SIPs a bit.
