Patrick Swayze and Lisa Niemi‘s love story remains one of Hollywood’s most enduring romances. Even years after the Road House star’s death in 2009 following a battle with pancreatic cancer, Lisa still becomes emotional when she remembers the first time they danced together.The couple first met at Patrick’s mother Patsy Swayze’s dance studio in Houston, Texas. What started as dance rehearsals during their teenage years soon blossomed into a romance that lasted more than three decades.Looking back in the 2019 documentary I Am Patrick Swayze, Lisa recalled the first time they performed together and the instant connection she felt.“It was almost like the whole stage filled with light, even though it’s just school auditorium lights. But it was almost like we were lit. And the moment I looked in his eyes, it was like everything came alive.”She echoed those feelings during an appearance on the Amy & T.J. From teenage sweethearts to lifelong partners
Patrick was 19 and Lisa was 15 when they first met. After dating for several years, they got married on June 12, 1975, in a backyard ceremony before celebrating with family and friends at his family’s dance studio.In a 2007 interview with People, Patrick shared what first drew him to Lisa.“I knew she was the smartest chick I’d ever met in my life.”He also admitted that “for a long time I didn’t feel like I deserved her.”The Dirty Dancing star also spoke about the secret to their enduring marriage.“A relationship survives because of keeping the friendship alive and learning how to fall in love over and over again and never taking the other person for granted and seeing things in a new light with new eyes.”He added that disagreements were healthy as long as they focused on achieving a shared goal rather than protecting one’s ego.
Lisa was Patrick’s partner on and off the screen
Lisa wasn’t just Patrick’s wife—she was also one of his biggest creative collaborators. While preparing for Dirty Dancing, Patrick revealed that some of his most important rehearsals happened privately with her.“My most important rehearsals were with Lisa in a hotel room. We’d practice over and over and over.”He also credited Lisa with helping him shape many of the characters he portrayed throughout his career.The couple later starred together in One Last Dance, adapted from an award-winning play they co-wrote. Patrick and Lisa had hoped to start a family, but after Lisa suffered a miscarriage in 1990, they eventually decided not to pursue parenthood. They later wrote about the experience in their memoir The Time of My Life.After Patrick was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, the couple decided to renew their wedding vows.Recalling the ceremony in an interview with Oprah. com, Lisa said, “It was incredibly magical. It was a fairy-tale day.”She also remembered Patrick arriving on a white horse.Following his passing in 2009 at the age of 57, Lisa has continued to speak about the bond they shared. In an interview with TODAY, she revealed that she still feels his presence in her everyday life.“His voice is in my head. He comments on what I’m doing… I hear exactly what he’s saying, which is generally, ‘Come on, girl, get real.'”Lisa remarried jeweler Albert DePrisco in 2014, but she has often said that Patrick will always remain a part of her life.“Just because somebody’s gone doesn’t end your relationship with them. We spent 34 years together, and that’s always going to be a part of my life and who I am.”Today, Lisa lives on a horse ranch in Florida with DePrisco, regularly shares glimpses of the animals they care for on social media, and continues to support pancreatic cancer awareness through fundraising events and advocacy, ensuring Patrick Swayze’s legacy continues to inspire fans around the world.
