George Floyd mockery, Django Unchained reenactment: Lawsuit details racist conduct at Phoenix airport
A federal lawsuit alleges Piedmont Airlines and American Eagle fostered a racially hostile work environment at Phoenix airport

A lawsuit filed by the estate of a former Piedmont Airlines employee has alleged a years-long pattern of racist conduct at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. These behaviours include white workers mocking George Floyd’s death, reenacting scenes from Django Unchained while appearing to imitate the Ku Klux Klan and leaving a noose in a luggage-sorting area, according to a report by The Independent. The allegations were detailed in a federal complaint filed by the estate of Niena Allen, a Black baggage handler who worked for Piedmont Airlines, a wholly owned American Airlines subsidiary that operates as American Eagle. The complaint alleges that the conduct created a “racially hostile work environment” and that management failed to adequately address repeated complaints.

George Floyd death allegedly mocked at workplace

According to the lawsuit, two white supervisors in 2023 allegedly posted a photograph on an office bulletin board showing them reenacting the murder of George Floyd, the Black man whose death under a Minneapolis police officer in 2020 sparked nationwide protests and the global Black Lives Matter movement.Allen and other employees reportedly complained about the photograph. The complaint says the two supervisors pictured were eventually fired, but alleges that a third supervisor who took and posted the image faced no disciplinary action and was later promoted. The lawsuit also alleges that a noose was subsequently found hanging in the oversize baggage area. Employees reportedly raised concerns about it, but the complaint claims Piedmont failed to properly investigate the incident and no one was disciplined.

Django Unchained incident

Another alleged incident took place in February 2025, when several white employees were reportedly quoting racist dialogue from Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained in the American Airlines mainline break room.According to the complaint, Allen informed managers about the incident and was told to return to the break room and photograph the employees. When she went back, she allegedly saw one employee with a bag over his head in a manner intended to resemble a Ku Klux Klan hood. The lawsuit claims those involved remained employed at the airport.

Complaint alleges unequal treatment

The allegations extended beyond explicit racial incidents. Allen’s complaint says white employees were treated more leniently for workplace misconduct, while Black employees were disciplined or terminated for comparatively minor infractions. In one example, the lawsuit alleges that a white worker was not reprimanded after crashing a Piedmont vehicle on the airport tarmac, while Black employees were punished for less serious conduct. The complaint also describes an incident in which a Black Piedmont employee was allegedly confronted by a white American Airlines worker in a shared break room and told she did not belong there, followed by a racial slur. The lawsuit claims Allen and other employees repeatedly complained about the workplace environment but alleges that management either tolerated or failed to adequately address the conduct.

Piedmont denies comment on ongoing case

Allen initially filed the lawsuit in Arizona state court in December 2025 alongside several co-workers. Her case was later separated and refiled in federal court in Phoenix on August 12.Allen died in June 2026 at the age of 42, but the lawsuit remains active through a representative of her estate. Her estate is seeking damages, interest, legal fees and court costs, while alleging violations of US civil rights laws.A Piedmont spokesperson told The Independent: “We do not comment on pending or ongoing litigation.”The airline said it was committed to a workplace based on “respect, integrity, inclusion and accountability” and that it takes employee concerns seriously.
