NEW DELHI: Union minister JP Nadda on Friday slammed leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi for staging a sit-in outside Sansad Marg police station, claiming that the protest was a symbol of the Congress leader’s “hunger for media attention.”Nadda said that Rahul’s sit-in protest was an attempt to divert attention from the criticism Congress is facing for disrespecting “Vande Mataram“.“The entire nation is once again witnessing the kind of cheap, attention-seeking politics that Rahul Gandhi displayed today outside the Sansad Marg police station. Rahul Gandhi’s sit-in protest today is neither for the students nor for the sake of justice; it is a symbol of the Congress party’s political desperation and Rahul Gandhi’s hunger for media attention,” Nadda said.“If we consider the timing of this entire drama, we realise that the Congress party is currently facing intense criticism across the nation over the issue of ‘Vande Mataram’. The public is demanding answers from the Congress regarding the disrespect shown to the national song, especially as a senior Congress leader was seen cutting a cake designed to look like the Tricolour. To conceal this anti-national face of his and to divert attention from the massive embarrassment he has faced, Rahul Gandhi has hastily orchestrated this new drama as a distraction,” he added.This comes after Rahul, along with Congress leaders, staged a “dharna” outside the police station after claiming that the cops refused to register a complaint over the “police brutality” on student protesters during July 20 “Sansad Chalo” march.However, Nadda claimed that the Supreme Court has already taken cognisance of the issue and constituted a 5-member high-powered committee headed by a former SC judge.“The whole country knows that the Supreme Court has already taken cognisance of the July 20th incident and has constituted a five-member high-powered committee headed by a former judge,” Nadda said.“When the country’s apex court is investigating the matter, what does Rahul Gandhi hope to prove by sitting in front of cameras outside the police station? Does the Leader of the Opposition lack faith in the country’s judiciary? The truth is that Rahul Gandhi is staging this ‘camera-centric’ drama merely to keep himself in the headlines,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Rahul accompanied Sahil Lochab, who Congress alleges suffered pellet injuries during a July 20 protest, to the DCP office to seek action on the complaint and press for registration of an FIR.They alleged that the DCP again did not provide details of the case officer or the I/O number.The complaint relates to police action and excessive use of force, including the alleged firing of pellet guns, against student protesters during the July 20 demonstration in Delhi.According to the complainant, the incident amounts to a cognisable offence and warrants registration of an FIR. Rahul has sought action on the complaint and demanded justice for Lochab.After meeting senior police officials, Rahul came out of the police station and said Sahil had not been allowed to file an FIR. “Sahil wants to file FIR for justice, but that is not being allowed,” Rahul said.
