America’s top VC Chamath Palihapitiya may have just told Sam Altman and Dario Amodei: You have failed miserably; lists three ‘biggest mistakes’

Chamath Palihapitiya, a prominent venture capitalist and “All-In Podcast” co-host, has issued a warning to the leaders of top artificial intelligence (AI) labs, arguing that the technology sector is currently sitting on a dangerous ‘powder keg’ caused by mounting public and political opposition to physical data centres. According to Palihapitiya, the executive leadership leading cutting-edge AI development has failed to persuade citizens of the sector’s merits and the community-level value of hosting infrastructure facilities.“Data centers have unfortunately become THE symbolic representation of the asymmetric upside for a very narrow tech elite and a class that are untrustworthy,” Palihapitiya said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Palihapitiya’s remarks came as a direct reaction to reporting from Axios revealing that the campaign branch for Senate Republicans sent a stern memo to prominent AI development organizations. The communication from the National Republican Senatorial Committee pointed out that data centres have turned into a fierce campaign vulnerability in Ohio, where former Senator Sherrod Brown is competing in a tight race against Republican incumbent Senator Jon Husted. Husted is running to complete the remainder of Vice President JD Vance’s term.“Texas, Pennsylvania and now Ohio. This is a powder keg and has the potential to unwind 200-300 basis points of annual GDP if it metastasizes. How did it get this bad? The collective leadership of frontier AI has failed miserably in doing the basics,” he added.The committee noted that the two candidates are locked in a dead heat, warning that data centers represent the heaviest anchor dragging down Husted’s campaign.

To repair the widening trust deficit, Palihapitiya advised industry figures to end internal conflicts and adopt an uplifting, accessible public message rather than relying on technical jargon or stoking doomsday scenarios.1. Paint a positive picture of what is possible with AI. Instead of spilling the ink on the glass half full, stories abound of pearl clutching, catastrophizing or arcane technical jargon that, together, breed mistrust, fear and skepticism.2. Visibly and disproportionately enrich the local communities AI data centers operate in. Tell these stories with a megaphone and have local leaders lead with the financial proof so it’s irrefutable.3. Stop infighting and stop trying to influence the government or trick them because of the asymmetric knowledge the industry has relative to outsiders and observers. This further makes it seem like a shady money grab to many bystanders.He stressed that companies must clearly demonstrate the positive everyday possibilities enabled by AI.
