IBM CEO Arvind Krishna on his letter that ‘shocked’ business world, sent company's stock over 25 percent down, making it 'worst day' in IBM history

Facing an impending quarterly earnings miss driven by shifting enterprise IT budgets and rising AI distractions, IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna opted for radical transparency — a move that triggered a historic stock plunge but is reported to have aligned with his core leadership philosophy. In an interview with CRN, IBM CEO Krishna detailed the high-stakes decision to pre-announce the 115-year-old tech giant’s financial shortfall eight days before its scheduled July 22 earnings call. The disclosure sent IBM shares tumbling more than 25%, marking one of the steepest single-day declines in the company’s history.IBM’s underperformance stemmed from enterprise clients pausing infrastructure projects to front-load spending on data center hardware amid supply constraints and surging costs. Additionally, Krishna noted that customer attention had been diverted by security debates surrounding an AI model released by Anthropic. He reduced IBM’s expected full-year revenue growth for the year by more than $600 million, saying that the fall is in part due to some clients pushing out IBM infrastructure projects to pay for the growing cost of supply constrained memory, storage, servers and other data center infrastructure.Rather than holding the bad news for the standard earnings cycle, Krishna fell back on a long-standing operating principle: “If there’s a hard thing to be done, do it earlier rather than later,” Krishna told CRN.

Why IBM CEO thinks it was important to ‘tell’ beforehand

By clearing the bad news early, Krishna aimed to pivot the official earnings call away from post-mortem explanations and toward strategic fixes. “Time will tell whether that was the right decision. I tend to think it was,” Krishna said. “Otherwise, we would have been spending the last week explaining the hesitation as opposed to what we are going to do to go fix it.”The decision highlights the pressures facing IBM as it balances heavy investments in generative AI and long-term quantum computing against Wall Street’s short-term expectations. When asked by CRN about potential vulnerability to activist investors or board friction following the market reaction, the CEO, who took the helm in April 2020, remained pragmatic about corporate oversight.“If you falter, one should always be just prepared is my view,” Krishna said, adding that public CEOs must constantly evaluate whether they are delivering sufficient returns. “And activists, at the end, if I look at the good side, are trying to come in to say, ‘I need better returns for clients and for investors.’ And if that’s the goal, then one should be prepared to deal with them. That is just the nature of today’s world that we live in.“Krishna maintained that his primary strategy to protect the company’s innovation roadmap remains centered on client satisfaction and workforce investment.IBM CEO Krishna reasoned the Q2 weakness to deal ‘deferral, and not destruction’. He said, “This was deferral and not destruction.” Krishna made the statement while talking to analysts during IBM’s latest quarterly earnings call with analysts. Krishna’s confidence comes in part from the fact that one-third of those largest infrastructure projects requiring a lot of customer CapEx have already closed.
