Microsoft AI’s chief marketing officer, Andra Mallard, is leaving the company, just 6 months after she joined; read email to employees

Microsoft has confirmed that Andra Mallard, chief marketing officer of its AI unit, is leaving the company just six months after joining from Pinterest. According to a memo, viewed by Business Insider, Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi told employees that Mallard plans to relocate her family to Europe in August to be closer to her ailing father, leading her to step back from her role. Microsoft confirmed Mallard’s departure plans, noting she will remain with the company until early next year in an advisory capacity. In the memo, Mehdi expressed appreciation for the energy and consumer-focused approach Mallard brought to accelerating Microsoft’s Copilot marketing efforts, crediting her with helping push a more unified strategy, including the push toward a single app experience.“I’m grateful for the incredible energy and consumer‑centric ethos she’s brought to turbo‑charging our Copilot marketing efforts; Andrea has played a key role in advocating for a more unified approach, including the single app experience.”

A shift in Microsoft’s AI marketing strategy

According to two people familiar with the matter, Mallard’s exit also reflects a broader strategic shift underway at Microsoft AI as the company reconsiders its approach to consumer marketing. Microsoft is in the process of merging its separate consumer and business Copilot apps into a single unified application. Copilot, the company’s flagship generative AI product, has generally trailed behind rival AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude in consumer adoption.Going forward, Copilot marketing responsibilities are being consolidated under Microsoft executive Jared Spataro, and the company does not plan to directly replace Mallard’s CMO role.

Part of a broader reshuffle at Microsoft AI

Mallard’s departure comes amid a period of broader change within Microsoft AI, the unit where she had been hired as CMO. In March, Microsoft moved Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman into a new role focused on a superintelligence-focused team, while also consolidating its various commercial and consumer Copilot teams under new leadership.

Mallard’s background

Mallard brought significant consumer marketing experience to the role. She spent more than seven years as Pinterest’s chief marketing officer before joining Microsoft, and prior to that, led marketing at Gap’s athleisure brand Athleta and served as CMO at virtual care company Omada Health.

What she worked on during her short tenure

During her brief time at Microsoft, marketing initiatives included a Super Bowl advertisement showing NFL teams using Copilot in Excel to analyze athlete performance data and build scouting profiles of top prospects. Microsoft also worked with influencers such as Alix Earle, who has posted content featuring Copilot on her social media channels. Both of these projects, however, had begun before Mallard joined the company.
