‘Fundamentally differed’: US military newspaper publisher quits amid Pentagon row over editorial freedom

The longtime publisher of Stars and Stripes, the US military newspaper, has resigned amid growing disagreements with the Pentagon over the publication’s editorial independence and direction.According to Al Jazeera, Max D Lederer Jr announced his retirement in a memo to staff on Tuesday, saying his understanding of the newspaper’s mission differed fundamentally from the direction being pursued by the US department of defense.Lederer said his leadership philosophy and understanding of the value of Stars and Stripes were no longer aligned with the Pentagon’s vision for the organisation. His resignation comes as the administration of President Donald Trump seeks greater control over the newspaper’s editorial direction.Founded in 1861, Stars and Stripes has long served US military personnel and their families, including troops stationed overseas. Although it receives significant government funding, the publication has historically maintained editorial independence from the administrations in power.The Pentagon has increasingly criticised the newspaper’s coverage. Defense secretary Pete Hegseth has accused Stars and Stripes of promoting what he described as “woke distractions”, while the Trump administration has objected to reports highlighting poor conditions and declining morale among US service members.The newspaper came under particular scrutiny after reporting on problems aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, a US aircraft carrier involved in the ongoing war with Iran. Stars and Stripes was among two military publications to report on falling morale and suicide attempts involving service members aboard the carrier.The Pentagon announced in January that it wanted to bring Stars and Stripes into closer alignment with government priorities. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell described the move as an effort to return the publication to its “original mission” of reporting for US warfighters.The administration also removed Jacqueline Smith, the newspaper’s ombudsman, whose role included protecting its editorial independence. Smith criticised the decision, warning that removing the official responsible for safeguarding editorial independence raised concerns about political interference.The dispute comes amid wider tensions between the Pentagon and the US media under Hegseth. The Defense department has introduced restrictions on journalists’ access to the Pentagon, while some of its media policies have faced legal challenges.Lederer’s resignation now adds to concerns over the future of Stars and Stripes and the extent to which a government-funded military newspaper can maintain editorial independence while operating under the Pentagon’s oversight.
