Meet 10-year-old Hsu Ting-wei, winner of top Silicon Valley invention award, for building an AI ‘electronic nose’ that samples air behind X-ray baggage scanners
The Taiwanese inventors recently captured global attention with its standout performance at this year’s Silicon Valley International Festival (SVIIF) in California. The inventors took home the top prize of the event along with 24 gold medals and other special awards, as reported by Taipei Times. The report also revealed that among the standout winners was 10-year-old Hsu Ting-wei of Kang Chiao International School, whose AI-powered “electronic nose” invention earned both a gold medal and the International Federation of Inventors’ Associations’ best invention award.
The “electronic nose” innovation
Hsu’s invention, called the “Novel Artificial Electronic Nose,” is an intelligent, non-contact security screening platform that combines a real-time air sampling system, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and AI-based odor recognition technology. It’s designed to be installed behind X-ray baggage screening equipment at locations such as airports, adding a layer of chemical detection to standard baggage screening.Jury chairman Amin Ghafooripour said Hsu’s award wasn’t handed out simply as encouragement due to his age, but reflected genuine recognition from the jury, who saw real practical value in the invention and were left with a strong impression by his work. Speaking ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Hsu said he hoped his invention could help prevent pork products potentially carrying African swine fever from entering countries, as well as assist U.S. authorities in intercepting drugs such as fentanyl at the border.
A strong showing across the board
Hsu’s win was part of a broader wave of Taiwanese success at this year’s festival, which drew entries from more than 30 countries across two categories, general inventors and youth aged seven to 18. Taiwanese students behind an invention called “AllerDetect GO,” a health protection system designed for children, older adults and people prone to allergies, took the top prize in the Youth Talent Competition category, drawing cheers from the audience during the closing ceremony. The app combines detection, alert, record-keeping and smart home response functions to help users identify allergen risks earlier and reduce accidental exposure. Second prize in that category went to a team from the Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University.In the general inventors category, Baichao Greenergy Tech Co received a special award from the World Intellectual Property Organization.
A record medal count
Across 35 entries in both the general and youth categories, Taiwanese inventors won a record 24 gold medals this year, along with eight silver medals and one bronze, the highest gold medal count for Taiwan since the country first began participating in SVIIF in 2018. Nearly every Taiwanese team at the festival came away with an award.SVIIF board committee member Matt Nuccio praised the young Taiwanese participants specifically, saying “Taiwan had quite a few great innovations,” and noting he was especially impressed by the quality of their work given how young many of the inventors were. Ghafooripour added that Taiwanese inventors tended to focus on applying new technologies toward practical solutions aimed at making everyday life easier for people.
