From arriving in Mumbai with just Rs 5,000 to taking on minor roles in Punjabi and Hindi cinema and even selling insurance policies to make ends meet, Suvinder spent years finding ways to stay afloat without abandoning his dream of becoming an actor.Born into a non-film family in Punjab, Suvinder developed an early fascination with cinema and eventually decided to pursue acting professionally. He enrolled at Punjabi University, Patiala, where he completed a Master of Arts in Theatre and Television. He has recalled how difficult those early days were, including periods when simply managing enough money for food in Mumbai became a challenge.Back in the industry, Suvinder gradually built a career through small parts in Punjabi cinema, frequently appearing as an uncle, relative or supporting character. His acting journey began in 2004 with ‘Des Hoyaa Pardes’. After spending nearly a decade working in Punjabi films, he made his Hindi film debut with a small role in ‘Udta Punjab’. He later appeared in Akshay Kumar’s ‘Kesari’ in a character role.These were not the kind of parts that instantly turned him into a recognisable name, but they kept him working and, more importantly, gave him a reason to remain in the profession. Rather than walking away when substantial opportunities failed to arrive, Suvinder continued accepting whatever work came his way while waiting for a role that could truly demonstrate his range.His financial struggles during those years were equally real. In an interaction with Film Companion, Suvinder revealed that he sold insurance policies to support himself while pursuing acting. Recalling the pressure of balancing a conventional livelihood with his passion, he said, “Acting isn’t like a proper 9-5 job. The trend in our family was always that either you look after the farm or get a regular job. My father fortunately had a regular job and would do as a hobby, so I inherited that passion. Even I tried to do that, without actually wanting to do it, that I do regular work and pursue this as my hobby. I would get anxiety thinking I will have to do something apart from acting.”For an actor without a film-industry background, the road was filled with uncertainty. Yet Suvinder found ways to survive without allowing financial pressures to completely pull him away from acting. His breakthrough eventually arrived much later than most, but when it did, it changed the perception of his work.At the age of 50, Suvinder became a widely recognised name with the release of the Netflix series ‘Kohrra’. His portrayal of a morally complex, grey character earned considerable praise and introduced him to audiences far beyond Punjabi cinema. Filmmaker Karan Johar was among those impressed by his performance and wrote, “I was blown away by Suvinder Vicky’s performance, he is and will be the revelation of 2023 across film and streaming … his silences can launch a million scripts.”‘Kohrra’ became a defining chapter in Suvinder’s career, proving that years spent playing smaller parts had not gone unnoticed when the right opportunity finally came along. His performance showcased his ability to convey intensity and emotion with restraint, earning him the kind of recognition he had been waiting for throughout much of his career.He subsequently appeared in Ranveer Singh’s ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’, where he played the father of Arjun Rampal’s character, Major Iqbal. I want my characters to be a little intense and also to have deep emotions. It is a different character than what I have played so far. I wanted to do a mainstream commercial film and the fact that this is backed by Mukesh Bhatt and stars, Emraan Hashmi and Shabana Azmi added to the appeal,” he said.From arriving in Mumbai with Rs 5,000 and struggling to afford food to finally becoming a recognised face in mainstream cinema, Suvinder Vicky’s career is a reminder that some breakthroughs take decades.
